Editorial Reviews
This 2 CD set features a mix from both Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe. Neil Tennants idea when compiling the CD was to create a sequence of music late-night listening, Sequencing electronic, ambient, classical and pop music. Chris Lowe on the other hand has chosen songs about love, friendship, sex, religion, hope and despair., starting with early 80s electro through Italian disco, rock, gospel and ending of course with classic Dusty. DMC. 2005.

Disc 4: 58 minutes
What gives Silva? There is *MUCH* more John Williams in the silva screen back catalogue by the Prague Philharmonic than what is in this set, and thats not including their entire discs devoted to Star Wars Films, Indiana Jones Trilogy etc. Why isn't Hook "When You're Alone" included on Disc 2? There's room. Why isn't 1941 on Disc 1? There's room. Why isn't Earthquake on Disc 3? There's room. Why isn't Far and Away on disc 4? There's room. Where's the other ten minutes of the Rare Breed suite on disc 3? Why isn't Midway on disc 1? Where are the Land of the Giants, Time Tunnel and Lots In Space tv themes? Etc. Etc. Etc.
C'mon Silva, most of these 4 disc mega boxes released in the past few years are packed to the brim, but not this one, and with new recordings made after this was released (the terminal, munich, geisha, war of the worlds, star wars ep 3, harry potter 3), it only makes sense for a "re-do" in the next couple of years.
Further, with Silva releasing the 100 Greatest Film Themes on six discs in a couple of months, it's only a matter of time before we see the ultimate six disc john williams set.
This isn't a BAD set to own, but it could have been much better and when compared to the Jerry Goldsmith and John Barry sets in this same series, this one is a major letdown.

Back to Mine is a series of mix albums, usually (though not always) mixed by renowned DJs or composers of electronic music. The compilations usually feature artists other than the artist compiling the album, and are based on what the artist would play at home after a night out, rather than as part of a nightclub session.

Prior to the breakthrough success of their second album, Vertigo, Groove Armada (Tom Findlay and Andy Cato) were better known as successful club DJs, plying their trade in clubs the length and breadth of England, from Tangled in Manchester to the End in London. For their first mix CD they eschew uptempo dance-floor tunes in favor of a far more laid-back repertoire--think "At the River" rather than "If Everybody Looked the Same." It's an eclectic mixture of classic and modern--from Barry White to Tears for Fears, stopping at all stations along the way. Unlike many of these kinds of compilations, there's not a duff track on here, and standouts like Al Green's "Light My Fire" and Tony D's "Piano Grand" make the cherry on top. Vertigo was justifiably lauded as the Best Chill-Out Album at the U.K.'s Ministry Magazine Awards in 1999; Back to Mine is a worthy heir to the throne. --Helen MarquisCustomer Reviews:
Heir to Groove Armada's Vertigo?.......2007-07-19
I'm a big fan of Groove Armada, and even though this is a compilation mixed from other artists' tracks, I am disappointed that their name is on the cover.
Back to Mine is a good series. They get great DJ's to actually MIX their own selection of tracks. Mixing adds a unique flavour to an industry (i.e. chillout/ambient albums) that is overly saturated with subpar releases.
Regardless, this is not one of the better Back to Mine albums. The track selection is horrible and stale. We all love Barry White and Al Green, but their particular tracks do not gel well with the others on this album. One may argue that the ablum is eclectic. This is true, but eclectic tracks don't work well if they lack even a little chemistry (other than just a slow tempo). I expected much more from this pair of very talented Brits.
2/5 stars.
GA and BTM deliver again.......2006-06-04
Therefore you get alot of downbeat tracks and music that isn't necessarily what the artist would normally put out. The same holds true for this BTM release. Groove Armada are already masters of the chill beats, but they put in a twist for this assortment of their favourite tunes. A direct quote from the booklet that comes with the disc: "In compiling this album, we've worked at playing all these tunes at their original speed as they're all too special to be distorted."
What you are buying here isn't necessarily a Groove Armada album - though it's definitely got their flavour. What you are buying is a truly one-of-a-kind, stellar mix tape. Seriously. Still worth the purchase, even at the more expensive CD store prices.
Best of the Back to Mine Series. Diverse music makes for perfect chill album.......2006-01-14
This album is slick and kewl!.......2005-03-10
Here you have a mardi gras of dance cultures, soul, funk, R+B, rap, house and ambient chill with more than a foot in the camp of black and latino culture; make this distinctly different.
Not at all a misguided album, it's like a club night out in modern Harlem and the Bronx fused; very, very different and that is the rarified joy of Groove Armada.

The penultimate collection ..........2006-12-07
I have always had a weak spot for (good, or maybe even intelligent) science fiction/fantasy and film music, especially its way of evoking mystery, grandure and wide open spaces. Call it a weakness if you want. But it was maybe really kick started off, for as far as I can remember, with Star Trek. But especially Star Trek II, III and IV - essentially a trilogy - because of their very romantic but very warm, human core, set on the broadest canvasses of unlimited and mysterious outer space. But then there was the music for adding that essential extra dimension of emotion and atmosphere. I am happy that much of the music on this album is from the Star Trek series and films, often equaling or sometimes even outclassing the original recordings.
This kind of music (for the movies) should be seen as an art on its own rights with its own merits and qualities. As such, the musical sequences on these CD's are a beautifully played cross section of some of the most evoking orchestral music for science fiction/fantasy film ever created. And I very much like the nicely blended, wide and deep orchestral soundpicture with enough reverberation to evoke a sense of wide open spaces.
I am quite thrilled by tracks like the evocative music from Dune, truly transporting one to the vastly sands of Arrakis (the music is wonderful, but to my great regret I think the movie itself is a flawed masterpiece at best, alas.). And then there is the very different, goofy music for Ghostbusters (memories of childhood), the spoofy but electrifying music from Mars Attacks (lovingly parodist music, this, with not a little touch of irony) and the happily adventurous, forward driving Theme from Galaxy Quest ('Never give up, never surrender!'), now also used for the internet-based fan-series Star Trek: The Hidden Frontier. On the other side of the spectrum we have the atmospheric music for Enemy Mine (an underestimated 'little' movie), the Theme from The Right Stuff (actually science FACT, not fiction, this film, just like Apollo 13, of course), the eerily attractive music for Species, the original End Title for Alien (not used in the theatrical version of the movie, where it was replaced by music from howard Hanson's Second Symphony), the exquisitely exotic music for Stargate, the sweet and warmly sympathetic, beautifully re-orchestrated, theme for Starman, the title cue for Star Trek: TOS (much more melodiously played than the original! If only a series nowadays could continue to be as thought provoking and as original as Star Trek was during its launch, fourty years ago ...) and a truly overpowering End Titles Suite from Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. I especially like the thrillingly grandiloquent rendition here of the music for Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. And how nice it is to hear the (thematic) similarities between James Horner's music for The Wrath of Khan, his great break-through as a film music composer, and his (two years) earlier music for Battle Beyond the Stars (which did indeed help him earn the job for writing the music for Star Trek II) ...
But on the 'down side', if one is looking for - for example - the gorgeously expansively played End Titles from Cocoon, it is not included here: one has to acquire the album that 'kicked it all off', so to say, namely 'Space and Beyond', also on Silva Screen. I was very pleased also with the inclusion on that album of some of the music from the series Star Trek: The Next Generation, namely where one of the characters, Tasha Yar, in one of the episodes (Skin of Evil) is saying goodbye to her crewmmates: sweetly sentimental and simple music which I have always wanted to own on CD. I guess that a few cues from the other two sequals ('Alien Invasion: Space and Beyond II' and 'Space3: Beyond the Final Frontier') didn't make it onto this 4 CD collection-album as well, but I guess that it would be the 'better part of the bargain' to opt to buy this 'The Science Fiction Album' instead of buying all three albums separately. Well, of course it is for yourself to ultimately decide what you really want ;-)
If I were to nitpick (which is not easy with such a marvellous project as this one), then I would say that while all music is performed with magnificent grandure and with style, some of it is not performed as crisply and as technically 'on the spot' as some of the original recordings: ensemble is a little slack and the playing somewhat stilted sometimes, losing some of the edge and the originality of the writing. ET and Star Wars spring to mind, but then the soundtracks for Star Wars are traditionally recorded with the magnificent London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by maestro John Williams himself, and these superior recordings (especially the ones for Episode I, II and III) can't really be bettered, IMHO. Likewise for the music from Star Trek: The Motion Picture, I believe that in the end one really has to resort to the ultimate reference, namely the original recording (which is true in many other instances of 'original recordings'), and then the 20th anniversay colector's edition of this soundtrack on Columbia/Legacy (truly unmissable, this veritable classic of sci-fi/film music soundtracks!).
But all in all this 4CD-collection amounts to probably being the penultimate high quality sci-fi music album collection (I certainly know of no other project that comes as close quality as well as quantity wise), with some of the most memorable musical moments from classic to modern sci-fi/fantasy film captured in lavish orchestrations.
Collection-wise: five *stars*. Playing: generally four *stars*, sometimes more. The recording quality: five *stars*. The music (qualified on its own merits as film music) and its (re)orchestrations: generally five *stars*. In the end this is all highly recommended, and certainly not to be missed by science fiction and fantasy film music fans. Klaatu barada nikto.

The Ulllllltimate Sci-Fi Music Collection.......2005-10-23
The moment I ripped off the shrink-wrap and popped it into my cd player was a moment of great trepidation. Believe me when I tell that I've seen my fair share of sub-par orchestral recording in my lifetime. Very often they are in those big super-packs of music, and suffer from poor direction, improper mastering, and sometime even pathetic orchestration (or worse yet have something sounding like a cheap synthesizer and a kazoo in place of a full orchestra). I needn't have worried though. This sucker is fantastic.
Many people who are not audiophiles will probably miss the point of this cd collection. It is not the original versions of the pieces. It is re-orchestrations, mostly by the phenomenal Prague Symphony Orchestra. Many of these themes didn't sound all that hot in there original versions because they were low budget films or were not recorded in high-fidelity. Here they are given the full treatment, mastered with the most loving care imaginable. Often the version found in these cds is SUPERIOR to the original.
Remember the theme from 2001: A Space Odyssey? Of course you do. But how many times have you heard a cheap imitation of the original version from the movie, starting too low in volume and ending too high (and missing the essential pipe-organ that gives it that extra oomph)? Well, this first track in the entire collection is not only everything it should be instrumental and timing-wise, but it also has been oh-so-carefully adjusted during the mastering process so that at no time is the music either too low or too high in volume (surely a benchmark for every other recording ever to be made of the piece).
Or what about the theme from the (at-the-time) uber-creepy The Black Hole? The orchestration of this piece of music goes from tiumphant to terrifying and back again, with a splendor and cleanness that I CERTAINLY don't remember being in the original recording.
Then there's the new version of the theme from Independence Day, complete with a violin solo, a far more electrifying ending climax, and a chorus so thunderous that you feel like applauding at the end. Simply indescribable. Kind of like the MIND-BLOWING rendition of the theme from The Last Star Fighter. This has been one of my favorite themes for a long time now, but I've never heard it played like this. I think the original version of the theme is something like 1 minute long, but this new version doesn't just fade out (HAHAHAHA!!!!) THIS version is THREE minutes long, goes through the main theme THREE times, with the final strains being so triumphant and joyous I could not help but feel an electrifying charge the first dozen or so times (come to think of it, I still feel that way). This is superior to the original in EVERY way. AWESOME.
And let's not forget the incredible new rendition of Stargate with it's heavy use of clarinets (for Egyptian effect!) and a triumphant new ending (completely lacking the chanting from the original version. This version is so different that for the first minute it is very hard to tell that it is in fact Stargate. But then the main theme kicks in, and then you get this incredible flute solo for my favorite part of theme (the whole thing is played slower, but arguably more powerfully than the original). My goodness. At first I found the thing so different I didn't like it. But then I listened to it again. And again. And again.
I could go on and on, talking about the fantastic new rendition of Moon Raker, the ear-popping Battlestar Galactica, the classic Star Trek (First Contact has a minute or two of the theme from Star Trek:The Motion Picture before going into the main theme), or the sweet renditions of music from the Star Wars movies (or the music from E.T.).
I have to mention though that this collection was not picked based merely on what people want, or on what is popular. No, the people who made it obviously thought a GOOD music collection was better than a popular one. That's why you get a heartbreakingly beautiful theme from A.I. instead of the main theme. It's why you get music from movies that you probably never gave a second thought to the music (because the movie was lousy). It's why you get Armageddon, Judge Dredd, and Robocop (who would have guessed their music was so COOL when there was all that crazy action and bad-acting going on on-screen).
I said it before and I'll say it again. This cd-set was mastered with tender-loving-care, and it shows BIG-TIME. High-fidelity the likes of which I have not seen since the days when cds were brand-new in the world. Dolby Surround. Perfectly balanced. BEAUTIUFL orchestrations. About the only thing that makes me scratch my head is the weird sound-effect tracks (Oooookay.....). Other than that, it's PERFECT. Obviously they could not include every sci-fi theme ever (no one can), but this collection is REALLY GOOD. A lot of great themes that got away (forgotten gems :), new versions of old favorites, and under-appreciated classics aplenty, but ALWAYS the full and complete versions with nothing cut-out (the theme from Dune is quite extended).
If you love movie music (and sci-fi movie music in particular) you MUST buy this awesome collection). It is not the original recordings. Almost always the new ones are better (if they aren't better they're just equal). This is what you have been waiting for. I for one am going to be buying quite a few cds from this company in the future. Give your ears the treat they deserve. Buy it NOW.

In a market saturated by mix albums of every description, Ultra Records' Back to Mine series glows like a beacon in a fog of mediocrity. The idea is simple: artists are given a free rein to compile sets that are both intuitive and personal to their tastes, resulting in mixtures of postclub textures chiefly designed for horizontal dancing and chilled-out bonhomie. Latest recruits Everything but the Girl take to the format like ducks to water, displaying a musical pedigree that touches on house, hip-hop, and light drum & bass. Although most people have warmed to the group's shift into dance culture, what will surprise is their sublime choice of tune. Kicking off with the drum-machine jazz of DJ Cam's "Friends and Enemies," the moody hip-hop noir of Deadly Avenger's "Bayou," and their own production on Beth Orton's "Stars All Seem to Weep," the mood is stoner-paced but never drab. Follow this with a little stripped-back ambience courtesy of Carl Craig and a rousingly sanguine finale featuring Donny Hathaway's "Someday We'll All Be Free," and you have the makings of a fine night in. --Paul TierneyAlbum Description

Nice ambient vibe to EBTG's contribution to Back to Mine series.......2006-01-01
Everything But The Girl's BTM mix is laid back, creatively structured album that churns along at midtempo with a solid beat throughout. It makes for solid background music, but does little to stand out on its own. It literally is an "in the mood" kind of album, hence the 3 star rating. Some of the more interesting tracks inlude Deadly Avenger's The Bayou, Beth Orton's Stars Seem to Weep, and the back to back funk of Ananda Project's Cascades of Colour and Dubtribe Sound Systems' Do It Now.
This is a solid addition to fans of BTM, or for fans of EBTG that want to gain some insight into the type of music they enjoy. If you have never listened to BTM, you may want to borrow someone's first before buying. To me though, this album is a nice addition to my personal BTM fave, Groove Armada.

This soundtrack captures the March 2001 ABC-TV production of South Pacific, Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein's musical of passion, danger, and racial intolerance in the Pacific islands during World War II, based on James Michener's book. Somewhat ... mature for the role of Nellie Forbush (the spunky naval nurse made famous by Mary Martin in the original Broadway cast), Glenn Close proves an adequate singer in her renditions of "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair" and "A Wonderful Guy."In the men's roles, Rade Sherbedgia's voice lacks sufficient richness for Emile de Becque's ballads "Some Enchanted Evening" and "This Nearly Was Mine," while as Lt. Joe Cable, jazz-pianist-turned-crooner-turned-actor Harry Connick Jr. makes "Younger Than Springtime" suave rather than wide-eyed. Robert Pastorelli and Lori Tan Chinn are fine as Billis and Bloody Mary, respectively, and the grandly romantic score is mostly intact, missing "Happy Talk" but adding a bonus track of Connick and Close singing "My Girl Back Home," which was cut from the original production, restored for the 1958 film, and cut again for this production. If you enjoyed the television film, this might be a useful souvenir, but serious fans of the score can stick to the original Broadway cast or the complete two-disc recording from JAY. --David Horiuchi

Oh dear me!.......2006-12-07
Unfortunately the Amazon affiliate I ordered from made a mistake and sent me this one instead, otherwise, based on poor reviews here, I would never have ordered it. So I though I would show an open mind and give it a spin anyway, but was sorely disappointed right from the get-go and had not even got halfway through the CD, before I was impelled to remove it from the disc drive. I then gritted my teeth and played it all the way through so that I could write a review.
The orchestration is weak, Glenn Close is mediocre as Nelly Forbush, and Harry Connick is really, really feeble in the lead role as Lt. Joe Cable. Quite honestly I did not realise what a weak singer he is until I heard this. I think maybe I could do as well. Rade Sherbedgia as Emile sounds like a second-rate attempt to mimic Maurice Chevalier, but without the charm.
The singing of Bali Hai (in which Juanita Hall's vocals are is so beautifully overdubbed by Muriel Smith in the movie version) was so-so, and to add insult to injury one of my favorite songs, Happy Talk, is omitted altogether.
I very rarely write such a negative review, but clearly if you want a good recording of South Pacific, either the movie soundtrack or the original cast albums are the way to go. I have also listened to the Reba McIntyre version, but in my opinion her whisky-and-cigarettes voicings are quite unsuited to the ingenue role of Nelly.
Perhaps I am a little harsh. After all this album contains plenty of enjoyable listening, but I am assuming that the point of reading reviews is to determine what is the best purchase, and the fact is that this is only a television soundtrack and that it is in competition with two of the most beloved of all stage and screen soundtrack recordings.
If you listened to this without knowing who the performers were, you would just think that it was a cheap cover version.
So even if copies of this are available so cheaply as to be almost free, it is probably worth while to fork out a few dollars more to get one of the definitive versions, parts of which are so beautiful they will bring tears to your eyes. I would get the movie soundtrack.

Fascinating "introspective" take on SOUTH PACIFIC.......2004-02-08
Though the stage show was one of Rodgers and Hammerstein's biggest hits, the script has not aged well. It is overlong and lacking in subtleness. The 1958 film, despite the beautiful scenery, is played woodenly.
So, in 2000, ABC TV and Glen Close produced a new TB film with a new script that weaves in most of the songs and situations of the original play while at the same time fleshing out the characters and making them more realistic.
Is the film a complete success? Well, no. For starters Glen Close is too old for the role of Nellie. She does act it well, however, and she sings with a characterful chest voice though I do detect some of her high notes might be dubbed. I have just re-watched the movie and don't find her all that objectionable. She sounds like she is having fun cutting loose in "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair" and "A Wonderful guy."
Rade Sherbedgia certainly looks the part of DeBecque but since we are so used to hearing robust Bass singers in the role, his softly sung arias take a good deal of getting used to. Instead of an outpouring of emotion in "this Nearly Was Mine" he offers a more introspective take on the role. It's actually a good idea and might work better with a stronger singer.
Harry Connick Jr acts the part of Cable quite well and shades the characters different emotions. True he is more of New Orleans than Philadelphia, and like the others he tends to pull the big musical moments inward. It is most effective in the scene after he first makes love to Liat and croons a tender "Younger Than Springtime." This is everything that the sung ought to be... passionate, sexy and filled with wonder. This is a young man caught off guard by true love for the first time and Connick communicates that brilliantly. His "crooning" is not wildly out-of-place and certainly in keeping with the types of singers he would have heard at home. Some scenes later he performs a remarkably understated "Carefully Taught" having played the intense anger in the dialogue scene that precedes the song. The result is more a case of Cable realizing what he is saying than just spitting out an angry indictment. It may not be the way it was originally done, but you can't argue with its effectiveness.
In re-writing the screenplay, the scenes and songs were re-arranged from their traditional order. In this new version we see the first meeting of Nellie and Emile at an officers club dance, and the song "A Cockeyed Optimist" is used in this sequence to establish Nellie's outlook. It's part of her charm and clearly attracts DeBecque. The structure also allows the first two scenes of the musical to unfold simultaneously.
Anyone considering a Broadway revival of SOUTH PACIFIC might do well to examine the TV film for its style and construction. There might indeed be a way to make the story work for modern audiences, clearing away some of the hoary old jokes and developing character instead.
As for the CD, well if you do not like the performances in the film you won't like the CD, but if you like the new film you will enjoy the CD which is essentially a straight transfer from the film's soundtrack.
Not the most excellent version but not an abomination.......2004-01-04
Bloody Mary and the one sho sang her did not make me forget Juanita Hall's or Sarah Vaughan's versions of "Bali Ha'i". Vaughan in particular gave an unsurpassable version of "Happy Talk" in the 1987 recording.
Nice album, just the same, but I guess, people should be advised to get the Ezio Pinza-Mary Martin album or the Rosanno Brazzi-Mary Martin album or even the Kiri Te Kanawa-Jose Carreras version first before this.
Some shows DO NOT need a revival or a TV version!.......2003-11-11

Discovered singing in a noted New York City watering hole, the Syracuse native's successful major label debut quickly made him a rising star who garnered comparisons to Mario Lanza--from Tony Bennet, no less. But Amante's showy, soaring style and good looks seemed destined for a wider audience than opera's, and indeed this sophomore release largely delivers on the tenor's rich crossover potential. While many classically educated singers seem challenged to throw off the formal constraints of their rigorous training in tackling pop material, Amante's journeyman musical background has gifted him with a more pliant delivery. It's hard to imagine Bocelli tackling such oldies Top 40 fodder as Gary Puckett's "Young Girl," let alone imbuing it with the melodrama that Amante effortlessly imparts it here. His "Delilah" strives for the kitschy verve of Tom Jones' original, with a voice whose natural power begs comparison with the Welsh sex symbol on the opening "Till" as well. Amante mixes enough Neopolitan standards and originals into the mix to maintain its crossover appeal, but curiously it's pop standards like his soaring, emotional take on Orbison's "Crying" (in a performance that reminds us that the rock legend was arguably a crossover pioneer as well) and a cover of "Back On My Feet" that seem to best engage his considerable talents. It's an album more oriented towards Vegas than Verdi, which seems precisely the intent. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

Better the Second Time Around.......2004-10-05
I purchased this CD not sure what to expect since Mr. Amante's first CD was a rather uneven attempt at Opera.
Luckily the old adage " It get's better with time" applies to his sophmore CD.
I find the song selection and style much more appropriate to his voice and with the exception of songs like "Young Girl" and "Delilah" this is a very nice CD.
Mr. Amante's voice seems more setteled and just a tad darker than on his first CD and he displays masterful command over the stylistic nuances of the English selections.
I particularily enjoyed the Jazz influenced styling of the Mario Lanz stanadrs "Be My Love" and " Because You're Mine" as well as the old Neapolitan fav "Dicitencello Vuie".
Also his reading of the classic "Caruso" is surpassed only by Maestro Pavarotti and even that is disputable.
Of course Mr. Amante still seems to have some trouble with the Italian language at times but nothing of the massive difficulty he displayed last time around.
Considering that his musical genre, "Popera", is dominated by Italians (Bocelli & Safina)& Brits (Russell Watson & Sarah Brightman)I think Mr. Amante deserves the credit due him as being a worthy American representative. Of course there is also the over-rated Josh Groban but that's neither here nor there.
4 stars for this CD over the 3 stars for his last effort. Couldn't give it 5 stars because in all fairness, Mr. Amante really ought to get a better understanding of the foreign languages he interprets. Other than that this is a fine CD.
Simply Amaz(on)ing.......2004-08-11
Trashing a talent like Michael Amante is further proof of your inability to distinguish between a good voice and a great voice. Obviously with all of the positive reviews that you see herew and read throughout the world, all of our ears cannot be lieing to us all at once.
Perhaps you were in a bad mood or your stereo just couldn't handle his high notes and was distorting?
Give his first album another listen (as long as your ears are thawed out) and I believe you will reconsider. You may end up throwing your trash where it belongs. In the garbage can !

While I love Underworld's works without Darren Emerson, this CD makes me wonder what would have been if he we're still in the group. Would they have taken the chance to mix those key influential tracks?
