Utah Saints

Straddling the gap stylistically and historically between the cut-and-paste acid house of Bomb the Bass and the big-beat explosion, this U.K. DJ duo fashioned recognizable samples from established classics into equally exciting contemporary dance singles. "What Can You Do for Me" mates Gwen Guthrie with the Eurythmics, while "Something Good" lifts a hook from Kate Bush's "Cloudbusting" (the first time she approved such a usage). Both those club hits appear on the Saints' sole full-length to date, rounded out by notable tracks including a shockingly traditional rendition of Simple Minds' "New Gold Dream" and "Trance Atlantic Glide" (designed to be spun at either 33 or 45 rpm). -- Kurt B. 3 out of 5 stars Pretty good, pretty old........2003-03-24

Strange how much I heard this in 92-93 considering it was in the midst of the grunge/alternative wave. Hard to say if this was much of an influence on late 90's bands like Crystal Method or Prodigy. I doubt it considering they were harder, and better. Some of this was popular and very dancy like "Something good" and "What can you do for me", but alot of the rest is almost new age-ish, and I think one track even has a flute in it. They do sample Eurythmics, Kate Bush, and Kiss. As much as electronica has changed, this does sound pretty dated. But it's nice for a trip down memory lane.

5 out of 5 stars Released in 1992!!!.......1999-06-04

These guys are/were predecessors to Prodigy, Chemical Brothers and the like. All they need now is a GAP commercial and they'll be performing at the Grammy's next year. This is probably the first techno album that I liked. Songs like "I want you" are superb. Every song on the album is well architected. Still sounds as refreshing today as it did (gulp!) 7 years ago!

Too bad they didn't come out with anything else for release in the US. Another talented band that is the victim of mis-management.

The album, however, is a classic...5 stars!

5 out of 5 stars If I was stranded on a desert island with one album..........1999-05-27

If I was stranded on a desert island with one album it would be this one. One deep complex song after another. Put on the headphones, close your eyes and take a trip into a world where the beat never ends and melodies play with your emotions.

5 out of 5 stars After 6 years, this album is still awesome........1999-05-06

This album contains danceable techno and mellow techno (trancey/ambient). Unlike most albums, ALL of the songs on this album are great. You'll definitely get your money's worth from this album. And even though it's over 6 years old, the music still sounds brilliant. Like Michael Stipe of R.E.M. said, this album was several years ahead of its time.

5 out of 5 stars SPEECHLESS!.......1999-04-28

I cant believe how awesome the music on this cd is! have had it for about 6 years now and have never gotten tired of it! great buy if you like Enigma, Robert Miles, Deep Forest.

3 out of 5 stars Has some great moments, but overall this is a decent dance-pop/electronica album - *barely* earns 3.5 stars.......2006-01-06

The Utah Saints clearly have a lot of talent, but they fail to utilize it in "Two". The track "Three Simple Words" especially proves that when they try hard enough they can create a GREAT song (this track is one of my favorite electronica songs ever). Unfortunately the rest of the album is noticably worse than this song, though a few good songs are scattered about. Their biggest downfall is when they have a good sounding song and either add in a voice sample that messes it up or when they let a song run on for too long ("Massive" for the first example and "Power To The Beats" for the second one). If they had gotten rid of the voice sample and shortened the other song then they would've been much better. For 15 tracks, the album is, on a whole, not that good. It's not "horrible", but it's not that good. It *barely* earns itself its "3.5" (mostly due to "Three Simple Words"; this song is AMAZING). Electronica fans might be a little satisfied if they ended up with this album, but not greatly. Only recommended if you REALLY like "Three Simple Words".

Highlights include:
"Sun"
"Massive" (sort of)
"Power To The Beats" (sort of)
"Lost Vagueness"
"Punk Club" (sort of)
"Morning Sun"
"Sick" (sort of)
"B777"
"Three Simple Words"
"Love Song" (parts of it)

5 out of 5 stars Such a Shame so many people missed this electronic genius!.......2005-10-07

Simply put, a fine electronic album -worth buying for the track "Lost Vagueness" alone. Emotive moving electronic music, crossing genres with ease and entirely written and produced by Utah Saints themselves, this album should have more promotion to do it justice. Listen to the samples and hear for yourself!

2 out of 5 stars I should have bought just the song I wanted from iTunes.......2005-09-29

Not a great album. There are a few wonderful songs, however, I think the others suck. Too bad I didn't just get the individual songs off of iTunes and saved my money.

4 out of 5 stars There is no such thing as "dated" music.......2002-04-25

As many have said already, in terms of style this CD is all over the place. Many different types of styles, mostly sampled in LoFi. While I do agree that this CD's sampling/production style seems the same as Utah Saints' first Album in 92', I simply don't see how can that be "dated". Music is like art, it really shouldn't be "dated" unless the listener judges music by current music trends. Just because Dream Trance (Robert Miles type) came and gone, followed by Anthem Trance (System F), followed by progressive trance, house, and progressive house, does not mean that any of these types of music somehow lack quality because clubs don't play them anymore.

Back to the Two album, my favorite song on the CD is Lost Vagueness, followed by Massive. Both of these songs are very moody and have a slower tempo but they are powerful pieces. Power to the Beats has a very catchy beat, yet somehow I feel like this song is made to be put into a videogame. Morning Sun does sound like something from Underworld with the continuous synths, a great song. The rest of the songs on this CD are not bad either, but they don't stand out as much as the songs I mentioned.

Overall I would say that if you still listen to the first Utah Saints album from time to time, you will definitely like this Album. If you are into techno you will certainly like some of the songs here. If you are into what is hot in the dance scene today, you probably will be disappointed in this album.

4 out of 5 stars Not as good as the first, but still good!.......2001-10-17

I was rather impressed with the changes from the Utah Saints over the almost 10 year span from the first CD release. The music
has a much more "techno" type feel, but is mixed well, and you can tell alot of work was put into the album. The album is a great addition to any techno music fan's collection!

5 out of 5 stars The golden voice of song.......2007-01-09

A wonderful recording which I purchased years ago in cassette form, and wore out! So happy to be able to buy in CD form, and well worth listening to. Kiri Te Kanawa has a glorious soprano voice, full of warmth and colour, and her interpretation of song is in my opinion second to none."Songs of inspiration"
really does inspire and feed the soul. As a music lover, and singer myself I love all of the pieces on this album with a passion.

5 out of 5 stars One of Her Best.......2002-05-06

This is one of the best performances of an operatic artist with the Morman Tabernacle choir in existance. Kiri's poise, music selections, and execution are flawless. The ending of "You'll Never Walk Alone" which would be forced for other artists is effortless for Kiri.

For anyone who enjoys choir music with guest artists, this recording is a "must buy".

    5 out of 5 stars Why forcing?.......2002-03-21

I bought the cassette (not the CD), and found one of my favorite songs there: You'll Never Walk Alone. This song was one that once encouraged me to walk with 'my head up high' during the (most) difficult time of my life.

What I don't understand from Dame Tekanawa is that at the end of the song, she forced a "show-off" ending with the unnecessary high note. I don't know what that had given impact to when doing it in front of an audience, but in the recording, it sure was not beautiful.

Other numbers were marvellous. I've always liked Dame Tekanawa.

5 out of 5 stars One of My Favorite Kiri Recordings.......2000-02-27

I brought this after watching (And taping) her 1989 Mormon Tabernacle Temple concert on PBS in 1992, and I have to said, this is one of my favorite Kiri recordings ever. It's still is!

There's some great selections on there that Kiri fans will enjoy, such as the Cavalleria Easter Hymn, Auf Flugeln Des Gesanges, Home Sweet Home sung in her native Maori (Dame Kiri herself is half-Maori), as well as some that doesn't appear on PBS (Such as the rarely-heard Nuns' Chorus, the Nabucco Va Pensiero, and Hear My Prayer sung in English).

Althrough the CD is recorded live, as the booklet notes stated, portions are topped and tailed in a separated studio session, to give the CD a studio-like recording.

I do enjoy it so often. Now, only if the video of that concert is released commerically, so we can pleased it a lot.

For those of you still living in the 90's, enjoy this album.
For the rest of the world, don't waste your money.
I got tired of hearing it so I threw the copy my wife had in the car out the window.
Now its lying in the street with the rest of the garbage. Thankfully there was only one album. Now if I can only rid myself of Yaz...

        5 out of 5 stars Genius!.......2005-03-31

This is dance music of its era but at the same time totally unique and timeless. Driving, dense, and amazing at times, it puts a lot of (actually most) contemporary stuff to shame. The big plus is it manages to sound REAL and not over-processed and that was the band's goal. The first cut has energy, driving drums, "piano", and samples Kate Bush for Pete's sake! The whole thing sounds like a labor of love.

In my permanent top twenty of all time favorite pop recordings and I am one fussy SOB! It's also one of the few dance albums I know of that holds up beautifully as simply a listening experience, although I defy you to remain motionless! This is the kind of overwhelmingly upbeat music a shaman could use for healing. Bless the owner of this who has great sub-woofers.

Why this album isn't better known is a tribute to the screwy out-of-focus quality to commercialized music. I know of a handful of albums, and a bigger handful of songs, that should be absolute classics and are barely known. Check out Pram (my all-time favorite band), Rita Mitsouka (a band not a person--some of the best and most offbeat New Wave ever) and the utterly individual Thin White Rope.

Sadly, later albums by Utah Saints just don't match up. A one-of-a-kind in all respects. Must have been visited by angels during the recording sessions.

PS I predict (and I'm taking dollar bets) that the instrumental cut Trance Atlantic Glide will become, in 200 years, the national anthem of some immense utopian space colony.

3 out of 5 stars Awesome for 92-93........2004-08-10

It's amazing how much I heard them in the early 90's, and then suddenly never again. This is a good sound of the times though, and almost holds up even now. For the most part it's dance/techno, but there's a few slower pieces too. The biggest and best songs here are "Something Good", which samples Kate Bush, and "What Can You Do For Me", which samples both Kiss and the Eurythmics. Everything else is good, just not as club-ready as those two were. If you like the genre, this is worth getting if you find it. There should be a few used copies between here and "Utah".

5 out of 5 stars Way Before Their Time.......2003-12-02

I'd heard the lead track "Something Good" before but I recently heard this entire album and I was blown away. There are a few moments on the album where the sound sounds dated (more so towards the end) but I kept having to remind myself this was Utah Saints and not The Crystal Method. Their sounds are so similar and this album is so solid all the way though that if you like TCM as much as I do then you'll love this album!

5 out of 5 stars Much-anticipated second album, no disappointment!.......2001-09-10

The sound of this CD is a little more "hip hop influence" than their first self-titled album. But the upbeat happy dance tunes still have Utah Saints' distinguished flavor. The vocals by Michael Stipe add a nice twist on "Sun" and "Rhinoceros". I really liked "Power to the Beats (Todd Edwards Power Chord Remix)" (funky and upbeat) and "Massive" (imagine if Utah Saints and Robert Miles watched "Neverending Story" and then compiled something...that kind of sound though Miles probably had nothing to do with it). Go to the listing and sound clips for the "regular" release of this album for an idea. If you like Moby, Orb, or Fatboy Slim, check this out!

Good stuff. They still got that funkiness of "Something Good,"plus more. The tracks are quite diverse in styles. "Power to the beats" is a great breakbeat tune I could see Fatboy Slim remixing. Lost Vagueness is up-beat, trancy-- Paul Oakenfold had already used in his Travelling album. B777 is a great melodic trance tune perhaps resembling Art of Trance and someother Platipus record lable group. Vocals in "three simples words" are quite beautiful. A few other tracks may be compared to Basement Jaxx or Leftfield. Eventhough Utah Saints shows diversity in their music they still maintained their signature sounds (you'll figure out listening to them). They've spinned with Leftfield on Radio 1 UK, essential mix. So I guess they could be comparable. A great buy, though.

          Album Description

FFRR. 2005.

5 out of 5 stars A touch of the holy.......2001-11-25

This is a nice CD that serves as an overview of mostly baroque choral pieces by one of my favorite choirs. One of the advantages of this CD it that it allows you to compare Beethoven's "Hallelujah Chorus" with the more famous Handel's "Hallelujah Chorus." I think that Beethoven's starts out better, but Handel's is, overall, far superior.

They do a remarkable job singing the Humming Chorus, an absolutely oddball piece of classical music, reminiscent of the Magic Flute's Papageno singing with the padlock on his mouth! No, there is nothing wrong with your hi-fi; the choir is just humming the music.

The choir does a magnificent job signing the Battle Hymn of the Republic, which, along with Messiah's Hallelujah Chorus, is one of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir's signature pieces.

They did an exceptional job of transferring the old analogue recordings to CD, so there is minimal hiss and fading.

This is great music for Sunday, or for Easter and Christmas. It is nice to have a touch of the holy in your life, if not for a day, at least for a few minutes.
