The New Deal

Is it live or is it iMac? "No sequencers or samplers were used in the recording of this album," announces the New Deal in the sleeve of their official debut (after three self-released live albums). The Toronto-based, self-proclaimed "live improvised breakbeat house" band isn't out to revolutionize dance music, exactly, but they do prove drum & bass, house, and other club-land mainstays don't have to be solely the province of technogeeks with laptops. This album might not make a strong case for one method being better than another--perhaps only the most discerning drum & bass purist will be able to detect the organic origins of "Self Orbit," for instance--but it certainly shows the trio are accomplished players capable of some delirious downtown grooves. Using only bass, drums, and keyboards, along with the occasional voice, trumpet, and theremin, the group journeys into spacey disco lounge in "The Ray Parker Suite: Part 1" and strikes up thumping Basement Jaxx-type house on "Back to the Middle." Vocal tracks are used to humorous effect--against the chilled vibe of "Exciting New Direction," a voice from the human resources department of a dot-com company ends with the kiss-off, "I'm calling to inform you that your position has not been identified as part of our new marketing strategy and has been eliminated." As finely constructed as dance-floor excursions like the nine-minute "Technobeam" are, however, the disc does leave the listener wanting more--that is, to really see these guys kick it out live. --Shawn Conner

5 out of 5 stars If you thought the Debut was good..........2006-12-15

This Disc is amazing..The title track kicks better than any other track on the album. But they show diversity in that they can slow it down and use vocals too. Like "Don't Blame Yourself" and "Homewrecker" are perfect examples. It's very groovy, but they can also kick it up a few notches to get everyone dancing!

5 out of 5 stars Exciting New Direction.......2006-11-08

This is an awesome album, and I just listened to it for the first time through. Their first self-titled album was magnificent, yet this album cannot be compared. Its an Exciting New Direction, as proclaimed on their first album. A little bit more electronic, a little more up beat, and a little bit more vocals all culminate themselves into a fantastic listening experience. By the way, if you get a chance to see them live, do so... I can't even describe it in words. I'd like to list my favorite tracks, but that's your own choice to figure out. It's worth every penny.

5 out of 5 stars The REAL Deal...........2005-12-23

Although I didn't enjoy "Gone Gone Gone" as much as The New Deal's self-titled debut, it's still an amazing piece of work. The title track, Gone Gone Gone, is an absolute masterpiece, and even those who dislike electronica and techno will find themselves enjoying this song. Other favorites on the album include Home, Episode 7, Homewrecker, and Don't Blame Yourself.

The female vocals on this album are wonderful, but I believe that their presence is one of the reasons I didn't enjoy this album as much. I enjoy The New Deal's music much more without the vocals, and although they included sound bites in their first album, there was no actual singing. Don't get me wrong though, this album is still amazing, and I highly recommend it.

If you're interested in electronica, techno, funk, or jazz, check out The New Deal. I promise you won't be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars Excellence - now available in disc form........2005-12-03

The first time I heard this album, I thought it was a bunch of nonsense. Oh, the folly of youth. I don't know what to say about it. I'd like to compare it to another band, but that would be pretty difficult. I guess its similar to The Orb, perhaps the Disco Biscuits. But thats not important. This album is just awesome. Read somebody else's review for verbosity.

5 out of 5 stars An upbeat album with a unique sound.......2005-03-25

A bit of stereolab, a bit of st. germaine, and bit of ambient. A very difficult album not to like. Don't blame yourself, a little while, and home are the highlights.

The last three tracks are truly great and have that mellow, chill, feel of songs that can be listened to on repeat. Particularly 'home' (the beat that is interjected 2:15 into the track is wonderful on headphones).

4 out of 5 stars One of my favorite bands............2007-01-13

I saw these guys a couple of years ago in Portland, Maine. I never even heard of them until we went to the club they were playing at. Well, long story short, these guys blew me away. Really incredible stuff. The fact that they put out so much sound with only three guys on stage was amazing.

Their website hasn't been updated in a while, so I can only hope they're still together (I would love to see them live again). To be honest, although this CD has better sonics then their live discs, I would get the live stuff first. On the live discs, if you didn't hear the crowd you wouldn't believe it actually was live. If I remember correctly, their live performances were recorded on Mini-Disc, so the sound isn't as full as this CD. Doesn't matter. The live stuff is the best. Start there and get this one last. Not that this is bad.

5 out of 5 stars The New Deal Rocks My Socks Off!.......2005-12-23

The New Deal is absolutely amazing, and their self-titled album is by far my favorite. The music is a wonderful mix of electronica, and funk, with a little bit of techno in-between. Keep in mind that although this album rocks, it is a little bit chill at times, which is great. The best part about The New Deal is, just when you think you've got their music figured out, they throw in a curve ball and change it up with something fantastic, different, and groovy. I absolutely love this album, and I recommend it to any who are fans of electronica, techno, or just downright good music. Buy this album!

5 out of 5 stars The Real Deal.......2005-08-04

A must have for any New Deal Fan. This disc really details the outdoor jam style of the band. If you are thinking about buying, do it, your ears will thank you.

    2 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2004-10-21

After reading the many reviews here, I purchased this CD with the impression it would be similar to Particle. However, New Deal does not come close to the energy that I have found on Particle and other similar albums. Their mix of instruments is predictable and at times monotonous. It's hard for me to really get into this CD and find the groove where the music carries me. Perhaps they should add some vocals as something is missing.

5 out of 5 stars Innovative melodic live techno music.......2003-08-18

The New Deal is one of the many up and coming electronic music bands. This CD stands as a prime example of why they are becoming so popular. This CD amazing from start to finish taking the listener through tight techno grooves to mellow trippy jams.

5 out of 5 stars Northern Period Counterpoint to "Sacred Harp".......2006-10-05

A beautiful collection of "low-church" hymns in a folk style, but from the North. Some similarities to Sacred Harp-style shape-note singing, mostly found in the South, but from New England and largely taken from mid-19th Century period sources. Extremely well-performed and haunting, these songs will be running through your head for weeks after your mega-church's latest electric guitar extravaganza fades away.

5 out of 5 stars Nearly Lost Heritage.......2000-08-09

I am appreciative of any CD, such as this one, that brings the sounds of traditional hymns to modern ears. This CD includes familiar gospel with not so familiar hymns that whisper of a rich heritage nearly lost in the maze o modern choruses. Many of these modern songs lack the genuine passion found in the traditional songs found on this CD. I recommend this CD to those who are interested in cultural history as well as in beautiful hymn texts.

    3 out of 5 stars Solid effort.......2001-08-28

The New Deal are one of the new spawning bands who are playing music typically left to DJs live on their own instruments, turning a concert into a live electronic festival of danceable beats and whirling keyboards. While the keyboard setup Jamie Shields has limits the overall range the New Deal has, it is a glimpse at where they can go. The only downside to the album is the fact that there isn't a lot of structure to any of the songs and the jams sort of just flow without any real direction (for the most part). The groove is very driven, though, and if this disc doesn't get you dancing, check your pulse.

    5 out of 5 stars It's about time!!.......2001-08-27

If you ever get a chance to see them live, drop everything you have planned so that you get your GROVE ON! They describe themselves as live breakbeat, but you really can't describe their sound with words... Lemme put it this way... you'd NEVER expect this sound to come out of 3 white Canadian boys. you must get this CD for a little taste test, but please see them live. We've gotten lucky in NY to see them a coupla times a year.

    4 out of 5 stars Organic Techno?.......2001-04-25

The New Deal opened up for Banyan here in Salt Lake City, and I left the show thinking that Banyan should have opened for The New Deal. These guys are truly great musicians. Can't wait to see them again, and I can't wait to buy another album besides "This Is Live". Don't get me wrong, "This.." is one of my favorite albums. I bought copies for a few friends. Great for driving at night, or just sitting around while stoney and the lights turned down low. Also great to dance to!

    4 out of 5 stars LIVE.......2001-01-11

This cd is by a different kind of power trio. They can pull off a blend of trip-hop, house/disco, DnB that is quite remarkable. This is a Live album and should be appreciated as such. This is not pure techno but more like organica. This is what the next age of jam/dance music by live musicians is going to sound like and I can dig it. If Drum and Bass is more your Flava and you aren't disgusted by living breathing musicians I'd also recomend Lake Trout's ALONE AT LAST ....with DJ WHO. Keep it movin'

4 out of 5 stars Get Down to Some Real Music.......2000-08-22

Wow! I was blown away when I stumbled upon these three Canadians at Berkshire Mountain Music Festival. They make an incredible noise with real, organic, instruments! Their huge live presence is captured wonderfully in their album, This is Live. All the tracks leave your feet itching to dance. Navidrome is a great opener, other highlights early on are the bass-heavy Wrong Turn, and Bullet. If you enjoy bands like Medeski and Galactic this organ-bass-drums trio will quench your thirst for great improvisational fun!

Wes really found a great balance with this one. No disappointments!

5 out of 5 stars Best of all.......2003-07-19

I think I've heard them all or close and this is definitely my favorite! Beautiful, sometimes eerie songs with gorgeous melodies and harmonies. Wes may not sing like Celine Dion (and thank god for that) but I think they are extremely emotional. Wes seems to write with great subtlety - sometimes fun, sometimes critical and sometimes heartbreaking and lonely. Its a softer album like Swings and Roundabouts or Why We Fight and I find the songs on this album haunt me for days and draw me back for further listening.

2 out of 5 stars Likeable, just not memorable.......2003-04-08

I find myself nodding to the rhythm of Harding's pleasant melodies, and occasionally humming along, but it's just not memorable. Songs meander along, finding there way to an eventual end, but they are nothing more than a mild diversion. I realize as I write this, I couldn't summarize one of these songs a day after I've heard it. One song blends into another; he creates an overall feeling of competence and professionalism, but I find the songs lacking in true emotion. Nothing wrong with that, but I want so much more from music. (I also had trouble with his rhyming "insecure" with "manure" ouch!)

4 out of 5 stars Good songwriting wins the day for English chap........1998-06-23

Most of the songs on this album are beautifully thought out and performed. Songs like "Infinite Combinations" and "Cupid and Prycho" are gems that reveal the unique universe of singer-songwriting. The production is understated which suits most of the material but in some places is rather dry. Wes communicates a personal and engaging sense of the world that is somehow soothing and compelling.

        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Worth 3 1/2 but considering these are just "throwaways"..........2003-09-19

The Rubinoos released two collections of leftovers that never made it on to official albums, and while the Basement Tapes is an absolutely essential necessity of life to any pop fan, this collection is merely good (occasionally great). Worth buying for "Rendezvous", the early demos, and a few other tracks, the Rubinoos have put together a stunningly diverse collection of pop rockers that still outshines many of their contemporaries. I have only heard the American edition, but supposedly the Japanese edition is the definitive edition - good luck tracking it down.

        Best Tracks:
"Over You" - One of a few tracks that begins with a silly radio jingle, this opener is a great rolling ballad with soaring chorus vocals. Should have been on an official album.
"Emerald Eyes" - More beautiful vocals, another awesome ballad. Pure songcraft and emotion, a keeper!
"Party 'Til We Die" - A goofball party chant with a hair metal chorus and even more hair metal shout out for the guitar solo. Great novelty tune.
"Rendezvous" - Written by Andy Paley, this may be one of the best Rubinoos songs of all time. A clock-chiming riff leads into the totally Phil Spector, early 60's girl group drumbeat and production. This would have been all over AM radio in the 60's - vocals that have to be heard to be believed. I can't rave enough about this song.
"Make It Easy" - A demo of one of the many delights on the 'Noos debut, this recording done at age 15 reaffirms their awesome talent.

4 out of 5 stars Rubinoos odds 'n' sods collection #2.......2003-08-09

The Rubinoos second "Odds 'n' Sods" volume (complemented by the earlier "Basement Tapes" release) collects demos, unreleased masters and alternate takes from the Rubinoos early years through the mid-80s (and on the expanded Japanese reissue through the 90s for "Paleophonic" era material). The Rubes typically brilliant harmonies and melodies are heard across many previously unreleased originals, well-picked covers, and a sprinkle of radio station ID jingles.

There's many fine moments here, including the euphoric "The Girl" (covered by no less than Gary Lewis!), the unrequited emotion of "Emerald Eyes" and "Fires Die," the new-wavey "Facts of Love," the Mersey influenced "Alright Without You," the Elvis Costello-styled organ of "Double Trouble," and the stunning wall-of-sound "Rendezvous" (written by Andy Paley, and borrowing an opening riff from the Beach Boys "Girl Don't Tell Me"). Al Chan shines on lead for "Party 'Till We Die," and Jon and Tommy build a 10cc-styled vocal backing for the demo of "Crash Landing" (which appeared in re-worked form on the duo's "Party of Two" album).

The earliest recordings date back to the band's first multitrack recordings, laid down at the tender age of 15 in the early '70s. Both "Make it Easy" and "Cats and Dogs" were eventually re-rerecorded and released (the first on the band's first album, the second as a B-side), but these original versions show just how good the band was early on - especially on vocals. The album's closer, "Rock and Roll is Dead," finds the 16-year-old Rubinoos recreating The Who in a living-room studio.

There have been two releases of this album. The original twenty-track edition on the Big Deal label includes song-by-song notes by the band. The Japanese reissue (retitled "Garage Sale - Deluxe Edition") updates the band notes and adds lyrics. The Big Deal release includes "Make It Easy" and "Cats and Dogs," while the Japanese edition drops that pair of tracks in favor of a fine cover of The Raspberries "Cruisin' Music," along with "Everybody's Got Somebody But Me" "Home To You" "Destination Love" and "Audities Theme."

If you have to pick one version of this album (that is, if you can actually live without owning both), it's worth shelling out for the Japanese edition, if only to get the Raspberries cover and the fine '90s tracks.
