5 out of 5 stars Varèse Sarabande à son meilleur!.......2003-04-17

5 out of 5 stars A copy in every household . . ........2003-02-09

This disc is so chock-full of classic scores from classic films that every movie-and-music lover should own a copy. Thanks to Robert Townson for producing this collection and the entire Varese film score catalog. My favorite tracks from this disc are "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf"; "Star Trek: The Motion Picture"; and "Midway".

5 out of 5 stars A sampler feat. some of the greatest film scores in history........2001-09-06

Words cannot convey what a collection like this means to a film music collector such as myself. Varese Saraband has been releasing quality film scores and music for the last 20 plus years. My vinyl and CD collections burst with so much great stuff from Varese. One day I was looking in the bins of my local record store and noticed this little gem of a collection. I looked at it and saw a virtual cornucopia of the great film score cues for only $ (and 2 discs). So I purchased it and opened it up. Much to my surprise, the booklet is chock full of information about each scoring session and pictures to boot. I also learned more about some of these wonderful pieces as well. Well thanks to Mr. Townson and this nice collection, I plan to purchase some of the recordings these cues were released on since I don't own classics like Viva Zapata, Alex North's 2001, Superman (not the Varese version, I do have the other release), and Patton. Guess I will have to save a few pennies, but it will be worth it. I recommend this collection to anybody who wants to discover and learn about the history of film music. I also think it's a great listen from the first song to the last on both discs. My compliments to Varese on a great collection of classics (and keeping it under $).

5 out of 5 stars "the man behind Varese Sarabande ~ Robert Townson".......2001-04-06

The music that this label releases is without a doubt in a class by themselves, always perfection. Here we have the 500th CD release from ~ "The Man Behind The Music" ~ Mr. Robert Townson. So much care is taken with each album, that you feel you are witnessing the birth of a newborn baby, and that may be just what it is.

For those of us who buy each album ~ people who work to create them ~ the artwork ~ musicians ~ and a list of some of the most talented composers and conductors ~ John Barry, Elmer Bernstein, John Debney, Georges Delerue, Cliff Eidelman, Jerry Goldsmith, Bernard Herrmann, Michael Lang, Henry Mancini, Joel McNeely, Alfred Newman, Alex North, Miklos Rozsa, Dimitri Shostakovich, Frederic Talgorn, Franz Waxman, Rick Wentworth and John Williams ~ and as always the sound quality and performances by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Seattle Symphony Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra and National Philharmonic Orchestra is dynamically flawless and simply superb.

This economically priced 2-CD-Set ~ pure film score sampling ~ is worth it's weight in gold. One should not have a favorite from this vast collection, but if asked ~ it would be "TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD" (1962) composer Elmer Bernstein took it to the limit and beyond, the story-line, cast and score was the perfect marriage.

A big, big thank you to ~ Matthew Joseph Peak (cover/session photography) ~ Jonathan Allen, Geoff Foster, Bernie Kirsh, Mike Ross, Mike Sheady and Al Swanson (recording engineers) ~ Rich Breen (mastering engineer) ~ and for the extensive 28 page liner-note booklet featuring "behind the scenes" memories of these past 500 albums, may we look forward to future classics on the next 500 CD's from producer...ROBERT TOWNSON!

4 out of 5 stars Refreshing.......2006-09-13

I first learned of this band at a local show and found their style to be refreshing. They have great energy. Their songs do however seem to blend together but I think that the range of their sound will expand with time. Worth investing.

4 out of 5 stars RIYL :T-model Ford, RL Burnside, Charley Patton.......2006-08-28

Not your daddy's Blues. This is the stuff you only heard from the deep south in the twenties and thirties. Some call it country blues, some call it pre-war blues, some call it delta blues, but I call it a damn good time. Highly recommended!

1 out of 5 stars Very Bad.......2006-08-26

Although I can't speak of this particular recording, I experienced these guys in concert and every song sounded the same. The Reverend appears to be a very talented guitar player, but his singing sounds like a CB radio played to loud.

5 out of 5 stars Bird songs beyond 'chirp'.......1999-12-16

The melodies we hear deep within a forest are entrancing vocalizations of tiny birds that usually cannot be seen. Their songs add an element of musical pleasure to our nature walks. As singers, birds are truly amazing. They are gifted with a syrinx which, unlike the human larynx, is capable of emitting two sounds at once. A Veery can even sing two-part harmony with itself!

When love is in the air, most birds make music; some sing while others merely drum out a beat. The rest of the time, their vocalization is largely through calls or other sounds. An amorous male Sage Grouse is a noisy fellow, what with the popping, swishing, and bubbling noises he makes in pursuit of his lady fair. Sometimes one bird species has several songs and a few calls as well.

A winter wren's tiny body quivers as it delivers up to 113 separate notes in a single song. Woodpeckers are rattlers and drummers, not singers, and robins may be one of the few birds that actually say 'Chirp'. Most ducks quack, but some also meow. Owls are famous for their booming who-ooo, but the short-eared owl barks. Loons wail and growl as well as singing the haunting tremolo Canadians are familiar with. The tiny chickadee whistles a sweet 'fee-bee' and rock doves coo as most doves do.

Many birders agree that the key to identifying birds is in their vocalizations, as some species look very similar. Recognizing bird songs can be challenging at best, but to make matters worse, mimics like starlings and northern mockingbirds actually steal other birds' songs!

Imagine filling your home with this medley of bird sounds every day of the year. Cornell University's Laboratory of Ornithology has just released a new two-CD set entitled Bird Songs of Alaska. You can listen to musical samples by visiting the Lab's web site.

Bird Songs of Alaska is one of the most complete compilations of BC and Alaskan bird sound recordings ever made. Casual listeners, researchers, and serious birders alike will thrill to the voices of 267 bird species collected by 50 field workers in North American parks and forests. It is interesting to note that a full 190 of these are BC birds as listed in the popular field guide 'Birds of Coastal British Columbia'.

The quality of these recordings is exquisite; the sound cuts are long and leisurely. The CD set comes with a booklet that lists common and scientific names and tells where each bird was recorded. And best of all, each species is assigned its own track number for rapid access and quick reference.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Voice! Awesome Sound!.......2007-01-20

I heard about Peyton through a friend. I've heard gospel-pop before and wasn't sure of what to expect. To be honest, I didn't expect to care much for it. I WAS WRONG. Although it has gospel/soul flavor there's so much more going on here. It would be cruel and unfair to try and define this album by placing it in a single category.

Peyton has one of the best voices I've ever heard, period. Fluid and soul-blazing, he rips through each genre crossing song with ease. In the process, he hits you square in the heart. You can't help but be affected.

DANGEROUS GAME was my initial favorite but I find every other song quickly creeping into my playlists!!

3 out of 5 stars Ballad Soulful Grove...........2006-08-19

If you looking for a pop ballad but also feels gospel with a splash of funk, then you've herd PEYTON...

This cd is great if you use to like early 90's pop ballads but now mixed with an authentic Hed Kandi spice....

My favourites are:

Loves Going On, I'll Rise, Miracles, Keep The Faith, A Little Sensitivity and (my favourite) .......FIND MY WAY.........

This CD is a sensational winter warmer... Try it! :)

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Artist Goes Unrecognized in The U.S........2006-03-25

Peyton's debut album is outstanding. There are some rythmic dances tunes as well as some ballads. I don't think that there is a bad song on the entire CD. Too bad that it was released in the U.K. and I found it somewhat difficult to find in the U.S. If you buy only 1 CD this year, check out Peyton. You won't be disappointed. If you want to get a taste of the type of music that Peyton has created, try listening to some Euro dance radio. Peyton still is not played on American radio. Too bad that we're all missing out on hearing a great artist.

5 out of 5 stars A new great male singer!.......2005-10-27

Peyton has one of those voices that you know would be just as amazing live. This is a major talent. I have enjoyed every track on this cd and am so glad I went to the trouble to get a copy (since it is not being distributed in the US at this time) Get an import copy or buy one "used" and you will be so glad you did. Great songs, great lyrics, great voice. Simple as that.

5 out of 5 stars A perfect album!.......2005-10-16

When I buy an album, it's usually because it's by an established performer, and I now automatically buy their stuff, or I buy an album because there are a few songs on it that I enjoy. Peyton's debut album is one of those rare little gems where you'll fall in love with every single song. Voice, lyrics, music. Peyton has concoted an amazing compilation of upbeat anthems and reflective ballads. One of the best CDs of the year, I promise you. Can't wait for the next album!

5 out of 5 stars Lyrical complexity, spiritual adventures.......2007-04-22

These three delightfully lyrical concerti, with themes respectively of love, harmony, and peace, are all distinct. The middle work is similar to the art of the late composer Lou Harrison, and indeed the canonic and the dance variations of Concerto No. 2 employ a gamelan ensemble as many of Harrison's works. However, Kyr is even more a romantic, and his sweet spiritual music soars and envelops the listener. Ron Blessinger's violin performance is a perfect match for these compositions. The first work on love is indeed amorous, but the third, regarding peace, is not so peaceful at first. It is the not the peace of spiritual or transcendent tranquility but one of aftermath. It must be hard fought to achieve, metaphorically. Drumming, clanging, and clamor give way to lamentation and reconciliation; it ends in resolve, solace, and, yes at last, peace. Robert Kyr, who is at home also in Early Music, is an excellent composer and I look forward to hearing more of his explorations. This particular recording will surprise you in how good it is.

    5 out of 5 stars amazingly beautiful.......2006-09-09

I noticed Violin Concerto Trilogy hadn't been reviewed and it deserves to be. Kyr's music is intelligent, listenable and lovely. This and 'Unseen Rain' both deserve a much wider audience. I recommend both.

This is the world premiere recording of the chamber version of Copland's The Tender Land, which the composer himself approved. Those who love Appalachian Spring and its wide-open, American, innocent but energetic idiom will discover much of the same feeling of warmth and homespun verisimilitude here. The performance is excellent. The chamber orchestra plays handsomely and with great sentiment under Murray Sidlin (who also did the arrangements), and the singers react to the music as if they were living each moment for the first time. Suzan Hanson makes the most of Laurie, singing with the right combination of winsomeness and reality, and her love music with Martin, sung with charm by tenor Robert MacNeil, makes for some beautiful listening. Milagro Vargas is protective as Ma, while Richard Zeller's baritone is a bit light and young-sounding for Grandpa. Douglas Webster sings the role of Top, Martin's fellow wanderer, with real verve. Indeed, the quintet that ends Act One, "The promise of living," in which all five lead characters take part, is simply ravishing. The rest of the cast is excellent. Try not to do without this recording; it's a beauty. --Robert Levine

        5 out of 5 stars Fabulous!.......2002-04-26

Excellent orchestrations. The chamber setting emphasizes the vocal demands placed on the singers.

The vocal casting is superb. Honest voices singing honest roles.

This combination affords the listener the chance to enjoy this opera as it is intended. The opera is often described as unlistenable, mostly due to the over production of sound. "The Tender Land" was never intended to sound Wagnerian.

5 out of 5 stars Copland: Composer for the American Depression Era.......2001-11-06

I will never forget the day that I first found a 33 1/3 recording of The Tender Land in Bailey's Music Rooms on Church Street in Burlington, Vermont. I made my way up the hill to the Billings Student Center, found an empty listening booth, opened up the record, and started it spinning. When I heard the glorious ending of the First Act: "The Promise of Living," I dissolved into tears.
Now it is many years later, and there's a new recording, this time a more complete version, but a chamber version at that. I can only say that this work still moves me even today as it did then, and the chamber version seems a much better rendition than the one I originally owned for two reasons: First, because it's more complete, so the plot makes better sense. Second because it is a chamber version, it has a greater tendency to evoke the stark realities of Midwest farmlife in the depression era. Copland essentially grew up as a composer during that era, and it is worth studying some of his starker piano pieces, especially the Piano Variations and the Piano Sonata, to see how he evolved from a spare style that beautifully evoked the America of his day to the more substantial works that came later: Appalachian Spring, Billy the Kid, Rodeo, and this great opera called The Tender Land. If anything, this opera is proof that the lessons he learned during the Depression were not lost on him, and became the basis for all the great music that followed.

4 out of 5 stars The Chamber Version Works Really Well.......2000-11-12

I saw Sidlin's chamber version of this opera in Pittsburgh a few years ago and walked out of the concert with a warm glow inside. I've been beating the drum for this gentle little opera ever since, and I am glad to have his recording now.

This is wonderful music, and if all you know of Copland is Appalachian Spring and the other popular suites, you are in for a real treat. The quintet that closes the First Act, "The Promise of Living" is stirring and may cause you to hit that "repeat" button on your remote more than once.

The chamber version is thinner and leaner sounding than the full version, and as such it places greater demands on the singers. The chamber version is definitely a singer's opera; the orchestra is just along for the ride. Luckily, they're up to it. I noticed no weak spots among the cast. Ironically, the Brunelle/MN/Virgin recording uses the full orchestral version but the voices sound all wrong, as if the singers had just accidently wandered in from a Broadway play.

This is the one to get. Compleatists might want to seek out the Brunelle version too, but start with this one.

5 out of 5 stars Copland was, and still is, a genius........2000-02-04

Just recently, I was introduced to Copland when I had to sing "THE TENDER LAND" for a choral event. I found this peice to be deeply moving, and I looked elsewhere for the CD. After listening to the whole thing, I was pratically moved to tears by the shear beauty and power of the theme of the music. I always enjoyed Copland's work, like the Appalation Spring, or Rodeo, but this takes the cake. I give it a five star rating.
