Louie DeVito's Dance Factory

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Underground New York DJ Louie DeVito goes straight for the dancefloor jugular with this buoyant 21-cut mix. Hitting all the right peaks and valleys for a packed-club fun house bounce-around, DeVito goes for some modern club classics such as Da Buzz's "Let Me Love You Tonight," Kim English's "Everyday," and the marvelous Daft Punk stirrer "One More Time." DeVito knows he's serving gooey cheese, but a lot of folks love Velveeta. Dance snobs might not go for Dance Factory, but fun seekers certainly will. --Steffan Chirazi

5 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2006-09-09

I know it's a disc full of short mixes of mainstream, vocal dance tunes, but I love it. To many real dance music connisseurs, that makes me very lame. I don't care. I like what I like. This cd made me spellbound the first time I heard it and continues to do so years later. I just wish Louie DeVito could choose songs and mix like this all the time.

(I do, however, agree that the last few songs (La La Land, Lady) are not the best and don't really belong. I just skip ahead to One More Time and it's like they aren't even there. The rest of the cd is just so phenomenal that 6 minutes of misplaced music doesn't make a difference.)

3 out of 5 stars GOOD SONGS, DECENT MIXING.......2005-05-28

My complaint on this album isn't the songs. It is not a hardcore dance cd and it serves its purpose as being filled with popular radio vocal songs. However, the mixing isn't that great and the order of the songs is questionable. I cannot stand this cd from track 18 on, except for the master mix at the end. I hate that funk sound and it ruins the cd completely. I wish the songs were a little longer on here and there were less songs so he would be able to do this and raise the quality.

1 out of 5 stars Failed to Hold My Interest.......2004-07-18

I am surprised at the number of stellar ratings Dance Factory received. This was my very first Louie DeVito purchase. I was visiting NYC in 2002, and was told this was "the CD" to own. I purchased it very eager to get it home and take a listen. I was impressed by the song list, as there were many of my favorites among the roster. However, when I sat down to take a listen, eager to transform my living room into party central, I was very disappointed at the result. The CD is very slow to build momentum, and does not show a good reflection of mixing skill. I was forced to fast forward through several songs. My general rule of thumb is if a track doesn't have you hooked in the first 90 seconds, keep going. I tried applying this rule to this particular CD, and I had to zoom through each track. I let it rest in the CD player for a couple of days and then gave it another try, this time listening to the thing in its entirety. I must say that I was (and still am) extremely disappointed. It just cannot hold my interest and does not get my energy level up. I decided to give DeVito a second chance when I purchased NYC Undergrond Party 6 in 2004; I figured every artist has a least one flop and thought Dance Factory was his. Well, NYUCP 6 was only slightly better. It shows marked improvement, but overall, I've concluded that Louie DeVito just isn't for me. He reminds me alot of DJ Skribble, whom I thought was/is a terrible DJ who caters to mainstream airplay and has not grasped the true art of motivating and moving a crowd through music and creative mixing.

4 out of 5 stars Great.......2004-05-30

What can I say? It's your typical dance CD; really cool tunes.

5 out of 5 stars The Best a Dance CD could get.......2004-04-27

This CD was very cool. I don't know how many frickin' times I listened 2 it, but it's alot. This CD also had some of my favorite songs of ALL TIME. ^_^It had DJ Sammy, Daft Punk, Modjo, and a whole lot of cool people. Buy this CD if you like dance music. ^_^

2 out of 5 stars First Review is a PLANT. This is the Worst of the Series!!! Horrible or Repeats!!.......2006-08-30

This is by far the weakest in the series of Dance Factory Level (1-4). The person who wrote the previous review MUST have been a plant or is completely ignorant of good Club/House music. As somebody who owns all of the NYC Underground Hits, Dance Factory levels, Ultra Dance, and Bad Boy Joe Mixes, this CD was a huge dissapointment. The only 2 songs I liked were repeats (Fire). The remainder of the songs were cheesy remixes, nothing fresh here. Just absolute CHEESE! Louie, you are really killing me anymore with this cheese!!! Terrible songs and mixes except for 1-2 which I already owned on several prior CD's.

Louie Devito CHEESED it up a couple of notches on this album. What a joke...

5 out of 5 stars Hottest Dance Songs of 2006.......2006-08-08

If you want some of the hottest dance songs coming straight out of NYC, then you need to pick this up. These are songs that you would here in the clubs in NYC/Jersey area. Louie Devito stepped it up a couple of notches on this album.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing compared to the first Dance Factory.......2006-09-09

This one just doesn't measure up to the first volume of Dance Factory. Nearly all the songs on the original were definite hits, placed perfectly and blended together seamlessly. I might be going out on a limb here, but I think that the first Dance Factory singlehandedly brought dance music back into the mainstream (where I live, anyhow). Whether that is for good or for ill is for you to decide.

On the 2nd volume, Louie's song choices were not the best. The first half of the cd, up to about track 9, is decent. Then the last half seems to lose its energy and fade out. All the excitement dissipates because the songs are not stand-outs and the tempo does not change from song to song at all. Individually, I am sure they are good songs, but they do not work on this compilation.

There are some good songs, but there are also some really, really bad ones. "Time to Rock" is one of the most irritating songs I've heard in a long time, as is "Two Months Off." On the other side of the fence, "Look @ Me Now", "Boys of Summer", "I Engineer", and "The Sound of Violence" are great songs. If you ask me, though, the only song that is on the level of the first dance factory is "Look @ Me Now".

Overall, Mr. DeVito seems to be resting on his laurels on this disc. The spontaneity and creativity of some of his other stuff is missing. It feels very repetitive and flat after a while, and that is something that I dislike a lot.

I say give it a listen before you decide to buy it or not; you might end up loving it, and you might end up thinking it's terrible. Everyone has different taste, so even if I was not that impressed, you should still give it a chance.

5 out of 5 stars Loved It.......2006-05-10

Being a club DJ I'm picky when it comes to CD's. I've never been disappointed with the Louie Devito CD's and I got this copy from Tampa a couple years back and I'm in love! I played it for my friends and they liked it too.

3 out of 5 stars Pop music format dance party album.......2004-06-07

This is a DJ dance mix CD with a kind of party feel. Nearly all the songs have vocals up front and the length of the songs is short, so it feels partly like pop and partly like dance. Adding to that feel is the inclusion of old pop songs or remakes of old pop songs: Don Henley's "Boys Of Summer" performed by DJ Sammy, Madonna's "Holiday" performed by Mad'House, "Through The Rain" by Mariah Carey, "Rhythm Is A Dancer 2003" by Snap!, and an instrumental remake of A-Ha's "Take On Me" by Fusion 808. Even the dance hits, such as "Never" by The Roc Project featuring Tina Arena, have more of a pop music structure. Adding to these "popifying" elements is that sometimes there is a bit of a jolt from one song to the next, particularly in terms of style, rather than a smooth mix.

The album is rather variable in quality; some songs I really like, such as "Look At Me Now" by Jessy, the amusing song "Head" by Thunderpuss and Barnes ("Welcome to my head...welcome to my mind..."), and the very melodic "No Way No How" by Jocelyn Enriquez. Other songs I like, but wouldn't say I REALLY like, and some songs I dislike, such as "The Sound of Violence" by Cassuis and "Two Months Off" by Underworld.

DJ Tiesto is more my style, I guess. For example, his mix of "Never," I really like--it's a nine and a half minute classy dance track, but the version on this album is a four and a half minute pop-sounding version.

I do enjoy this album, though, when I want to listen to pop-format dance tunes and a variety of dance music with a party atmosphere. Many of the songs have a rich electronic sound, which I particularly like.

2 out of 5 stars Wow, Im never listening to this CD again.......2003-12-23

Im really upset to have been so excited when i purchased this CD to wanting to throw it out the window. The songs chosen for this CD are just not hot enough. The only songs that make the CD keepworthy are numbers 1 and 2 and maybe even the mariah carey song. The drunkenmonkey song makes me mad because it is not appealing at all. Actually it samples eminems song "Without Me" but its still wack. Dont purchase this album. The first dance factory is way better.

3 out of 5 stars its ok.......2003-10-20

I do have to admit that Louie DeVito is slippin. I have mixed feelings about the cd. Theres a few good songs on this album and I love how it all flows together but 'Dance Factory' was a much better cd. I liked 'Look @ me now', 'Time to rock', 'Breathe' and a few others on Level 2. The Megamix with Bad Boy Joe is always the best!! I hated 'Holiday' and 'Rhythm is a dancer.' Im kinda bored with all of it though. Im waiting for him to come out with something that will defend his friggin title.

5 out of 5 stars HIGH ENERGY.......2006-01-07

I guess everyone is entitled to their opinion. I have always loved high energy music, bpm 122+. This cd is great for a party (have played it and had feet tapping and had bodies moving), also have used it for exercise (treadmill). This cd reminds me of my dancing days at "The Ice Palace" on West 57th street in NYC. Great people who thrived on dancing to High Energy music. I highly recommend it.

1 out of 5 stars No Wonder........2004-12-10

Save your money and get a Bad Boy Joe CD. He's the guy who mixed all of Devitos cd's anyway. don't believe it? Look at any of Louie's cd's and see for yourself. Edited by Bad Boy Joe means he did all the mixing. Why do you think everyone says Bad Boy Joe's cd's sound like Devito? Because he mixed them all. This is why this cd is so awful, no joe. All you stubborn people, just keep feeding this guy's ego.

1 out of 5 stars poor.......2004-11-14

I'm a great fan of Louie DeVito and also bought all of his cds but i wont buy this one because the songs are old fashioned, they were passed from the dancefloors so i think he was drunk when he choosed the playlist... but i know he is the best and he will be back with a great new cd as soon as possible...

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing Work For Such Good Songs.......2004-10-03

You see songs such as "Easy as Life" and "I Like It" and "Get It Off" and "If I Close my Eyes" and you expect greatness since this is mixed by Louie Devito. It is almost as like Louie has become the Yankees of Dance DJ's. Anything less than a perfect cd with every song being a big hit and the mixing to be flowing perfectly is considered a failure just like when the Yanks make it to the World Series but lose. This cd rates right now as like the Yankees making the playoffs for another year. You know it was going to happen just like you know Louie's cd will be decent. However, if the Yanks don't win the World Series I will be upset because they have spoiled me for a decade now, just like Louie spoiled us in the past with NYC Underground 1,2,3,4 and Dance Factory. This cd is still better than most out there and only gets three stars because I know Louie is capable of so much better mixing.

2 out of 5 stars Much less than what I expected.......2004-09-30

I bought this CD after reading praise reviews at PerfectBeat.com and sampling the songs figuring getting this compilation will eliminate the need to buy certain singles. Some great songs included here like hard-to-find Deborah Cox song from Aida, Monica's "Get It Off," Benni Benassi's "Illusion," LMC, Narcotic Thrust, "Summer Jam," etc. However, many songs have been butchered by jumping to vocal parts and skipping the instrumentals (which are in the mixes for a reason, othewise radio versions would be just sufficient). The transitions seem rushed. I totally agree with some other reviewers that transitions are not smooth and especially that the sound quality is very very poor. For the lack of a technical term, the sound is just flat, as if the disc is recorded in mono.
I would not stay long on a dancefloor if this mix was playing. I am so glad I bought this CD used.

Sure, it's great to get on CD Deborah Cox, Monica, Wynonna, and Angelo Venuto's Sweet Carolina, which was added exclusively to this "deluxe" edition of Dance Factory level 3 (unfortunately, it's the version that doesn't include this song that is not censored lyrically)...but as most of these commercial mixes do, you are given a lot of tracks in short versions. If you're looking for longer versions of many of the hard to get tracks, stick to series like Party Groove, Global Groove, and Masterbeat. Track times here are:
