Journeys By DJ: 70 Minutes of Madness

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
When Coldcut initially released 70 Minutes of Madness, in 1997, it caused a mighty stir among the dance community. Mixing drum and bass, electro, dub, hip-hop, reggae, experimental sounds, and avant-garde techno into a tight and cohesive whole, it was seen as one of the decade's most daring, mischievous, and innovative mixes. One of the album's main achievements was to render many so-called mix compilations narrow and basic, so its current re-release into a musical climate saturated with insipid comps couldn't be more timely or relevant. Not a beat is missed as the record barrels and blusters through tune after tune, climbing from peak to peak with mighty, imaginative strides. If you missed out first time around, this is a golden opportunity to seriously enhance your collection. --Paul Sullivan

Product Description
Coldcut's 70 Minutes of Madness is widely credited as 'the best DJ mix album of all time'. Blending funk, hip-hop, techno and just about everything else, the album rewrote the rulebook on mixes, clearly defining trip hop along the way. The production was suspended in 1998, while demand got out of control, with copies going for $70 on Ebay. So here it is, back by public demand. Slipcase.

1 out of 5 stars Is everyone going crazy?.......2003-01-20

Having bought this album in the good tradition of the previous series of JDJ albums to say I was disappointed would be an understatement. Coldcut are just showing off a record collection that any decent music fan would already have. Jello Biafra speeches yeah very good been done before and as for the "I got rythmns I havent used yet" sample, try and take a look at the Dirtchamber sessions (Larry Howlett) to see how it was used on an album that was mixed properly. And why we are on mixing well if there is any on this album please help me see where. It jumps fro track to track going up and down like a seesaw, no rhytmn or style whatsoever. This would be the third Coldcut album I have bought and I am yet to be impressed. giving them the benefit of the doubt was a mistake I have now eventually learnt from. Go invest in some new tunes and stop dredging up this pile of parc. Consider yourself slated.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the best.......2001-12-17

Even though this album is a few years old, it still sounds fresh as a daisy. As usual, Coldcut were way ahead of the times producing a true musical journey. The musical styles range all the way from breakneck drum n bass to chilled out ambient, covering a lot of styles in between. The mixing is technically faultless, moving from track to track seamlessly and Coldcut drop lots of their signature samples in the mix just to make it even harder to work out which track is which.

It is the most eclectic mix album in existence, daring to be different and sometimes skating a bit close to the edge of acceptable dance genres. If you like uneasy listening and an album that gets better with every listen then this is for you.

5 out of 5 stars THE finest example of mixing between genres.......1999-04-18

This C.D is so far ahead of it's time that it iis still fresh today, four years after its release. Ignoring the standard '4 on tha floor' technique, Coldcut takes you on a journey with their own tracks with help from DJ Food, Red Snapper, Photek and includes the best use of the Doctor Who theme that you will ever here. Simply the best mix C.D. I have ever heard.

5 out of 5 stars "This is going to be the most astounding thing you've ever heard".......2006-03-25

More and Black (aka, Coldcut) were right. This really is "going to be the most astounding thing you've ever heard."

Even though this compilation is now 10 years old, the programming and mixing is still so unique and innovative, not to mention so thought-provoking. It's not just drum n bass, jazz, trip hop, and scratching; there are a lot of messages in this piece that will make you sit back and think (Bob Holroyd's "African Drug" is a great example).

Words really can't do this piece of art any justice. Do yourself a favor and buy this and judge for yourself. Whether you're a fan of "dance music" or not, this is 70 minutes you're never going to forget.

In summary, Coldcut's JDJ comp is magnificent. Buy it and be astounded.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing DJ set - they navigate through multiple genres with ease! Most people will really like this!.......2006-01-16

Coldcut's "Journeys By DJ: 70 Minutes of Madness" was such a great and influential album when it came out in 1996 because it dared to mix an incredibly wide-range of genres into one coherent DJ set (hip-hop, avant garde, trip-hop, reggae, dub, etc...). Every single track here is good, and some are even great - most people will like them a lot. DJs Jonathan More and Matt Black do an excellent job mishmashing all of these genres into one coherent and extremely satisfying DJ set. They even make room for some pretty funny/slightly scary samples that appear during the latter half of the album (see "Message From Our Sponsor" for a weird, but potentially possible, PSA sample). Not all of the material is theirs, yes, but you won't mind in the end - it remains a very eclectic and interesting mix of genres and artists. There's something here that everyone will like, and with seventy minutes of great turntablism it's hard not love this album. DJs and turntablists will no doubt love this album, but I also think it has some great mass appeal otherwise! Absolutely recommended!

Highlights include:
the entire album!

5 out of 5 stars excellent extension of late 70's-80's hip hop mixing.......2005-12-05

a freind of mine brought this back with him from NYC in 1996... my jaw dropped when he put it into the cd player. it was the first time, in a long time, that I heard such an eclectic and ballsy mix. not since early 80's hip hop mix sets by Flash and Bambaataa. Coldcut have no reservations about cutting it up...mixing and blending many many different styles and genres...quite skillfully. now I must rant...

in my opinion, the most important thing about this mix when it originally came out, is that it practically stood alone in the modern 'electronica' scene. it's rather unfortunate, but, too many dj's stick to one style (sometimes out of choice and convenience, other times because of their audience's expectations). I think this is very lazy and cowardly on the part of the dj... and on the part of the audience as well. of course, club sets don't need to be as eclectic as this particular mix...but, nor do they need to be over 2 hours of the exact same genre. it's really kind of boring. the art of dj'ing is about MIXING. first and foremost. unadventerous dj's bring about unadventerous parties. to the person that took stars out of their review simply because this mix isn't 70 minutes of straight forward dance music...ulgh... it's time to realize that there's really much more to it than that. dj'ing has never been only for the dancefloor...that's just a part of it. and, this level of quality genre-hopping is not easy to do. when you look back to this mix, you can see that it actually goes somewhere... they are playing with tempo, chronology, genre, mood, etc....it has peaks and valleys, a place of beginning and a destination. when you finish listening, you feel like you went on a journey...probably the best example in this series of actual 'journeys by dj.' but, anyways...

right away with this mix, you know you are listening to something special. when they flip the dillinja remix of Ashabanapal on 33 into 'noddy holder' into plastikman into jb mashup.... you know it's about to go down. talk about bridging several different 'scenes' in the span of a few minutes. and it's still funky as hell! brilliant. if you ever get a chance to see these guys live, it's amazing. their video/audio mix sets are truly memorable.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting, but not exactly uplifting.......2005-08-03

With so many 5-star reviews, and having known about Coldcut for eons, I figured this would be a no-brainer. I love dj mixed sets; one thing I appreciate is smooth mixing and track programming-- this CD has definitely got it, which actually amazes the heck out of me considering they change up the tempo so many times, switching from D&B to house to funk to trip hop to whatever. But unfortunately that is what I found to be most disappointing about the mix-- it's *TOO* eclectic. Starts out rocking hard and very dance-y, but about mid-CD it's practically ambient/easy-listening, and then back to funky dance party. WTF? If I heard this mix at a club, I'd be sitting through most of it. However, as it is, it's good to pop in for a road trip and be happy listening to a pretty good choice of tracks that is well-mixed and programmed... just don't expect a non-stop dance party from end to end.

5 out of 5 stars you really do need this..........2003-11-14

I paid more for this CD than any other in my collection... and I still think I got the better end of the deal! I have well over 200 sets in my collection, and I still rank this one in my top 5. This set crosses many musical genres with relative ease. Who else would dare to cross Funki Porcini, Plastikman, Jello Biafra, and a Roberta Flack rework? Nothing "cold" about these cuts, just plain ol' brilliance.

For those wise enough to heed my advice... you're welcome.
