I Com

Weaving electroclash and Euro-sleaze through a strong set of tech-pop, Miss Kittin continues to evolve on I Com. Kittin is still known primarily for the campy, droll persona she perfected while collaborating with the Hacker (First Album), and especially Felix Da Housecat (Kittenz and Thee Glitz). But she brings more to the table than just a talent for irony; her 2003 mix record Radio Caroline 1 showed off an impressive authority in the studio. I Com shows the same ear for production, and makes an admirable effort to stretch, pushing songs forward with an aggressive futurism. The formula results in songs like "Dub About Me," which uses patient, Massive Attack-like development and a rude chunk of electric noise to induce a brooding hypnosis. It’s a cerebral record, but Kittin herself is such a natural tease you hardly care how much skill is involved: you’d rather grab a French-to-English dictionary to find out what salacious bits you can translate on songs like "3eme Sexe." Sophisticated and incorrigible, I Com's detached sensuality is tough to resist. --Matthew Cooke

Monsoon Wedding is Mychael Danna's second collaboration with film director Mira Nair, (Kama Sutra was the first), and he has again compiled a winning soundtrack. Danna explores a wide range of emotions, from solemn to celebratory, through different generations of Indian culture. The contemplative "Good Indian Girls" and "Hold Me, I'm Falling" feature Danna's trademark piano ambience over traditional Indian instrumentation, and the vivacious "Baraat" sounds like a Punjabi variation on Dixieland, while "Delhi.com" ventures into dreamy ethno-techno territory. Sukhwinder Singh's "Today My Heart Desires" serves up lively bhangra rock, and Laxmikant Pyarelal's "Today the Weather Plays Tricks on Me" (performed by Mohammed Rafi) swoons with strings and male vocals. In all, the soundtrack's pleasing variety of Eastern music mirrors the film's old and new worlds living within a singular culture. --Bryan Reesman

5 out of 5 stars Monsoon Wedding Soundtrack is Terrific.......2007-05-18

I really enjoyed the movie and was pleased to find the soundtrack. Great cd if you're a fan of Bollywood!

5 out of 5 stars Loved it!.......2007-03-24

I just saw the movie MONSOON WEDDING and I absolutely loved it! Of course, I just HAD to have the soundtrack, so I bought the Cd recently and loved it too! WOW!

The Cd will leave you in a happy mood... Wonderful up-beat songs, many are so danceable and hipnotic. I've been playing this Cd all week ...I just wish it were longer because I would love to have more Cds like this in my Cd collection.

5 out of 5 stars Just as fabulous as the movie!.......2007-01-31

This is an excellent soundtrack from an excellent movie. The music is fantastic - makes you want get up and move your feet! It's got such a happy, wistful, exotic flavor throughout the CD. I think this will probably be one that I wear out from listening to it so much!

5 out of 5 stars Love It, Love It, Love It.......2007-01-21

I just love this CD. I'm preferential to the work of Mychael Danna and this is another awesome work of his. There is everything from old Indian love ballads to the popular Bollywood music of today, with some very beautiful instrumentals in between.

I'd recommend seeing the movie too. As well, I'd check out Danna's music for another Mira Nair movie, "Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love."

4 out of 5 stars Culture-Happy-Dance-Reflect-Appreciate-Savor-Relax-Laugh.......2006-11-06

Above I listed some words that first came to mind when I thought about this cd.
It is very Culture rich and soaked in Indian flavor. It's colorful and makes you happy with a laugh or two; as it seeks to portray the traditional music typical of a Punjabi wedding in Delhi, India.
You want to dance with most songs and sit quietly to reflect with others. I listed appreciate because we often don't sit back to appreciate the richness that other cultures provide. My 2 year old appreciates this music in her broken wanna be Hindi mimic.
She dances as does my 6 year old to this music. It's really a great CD but I would recommend seeing the movie first.

Here again young Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Florez proves himself a pleasure to listen to. The music on this CD is not as florid as on his previous recital, but the manner in which he approaches this selection of scenes by Donizetti and Bellini is just as artful. The tone is beautiful and even from bottom to amazingly easy top; he gets "in" each character; his smooth, elegant delivery ("Una furtive lagrima" is simply and meltingly sung, as is Ernesto's aria from Don Pasquale) is as wondrous as his acrobatics--rarely have Tonio's nine high Cs from the Fille du Regiment aria sounded so natural, so part of the character's enthusiasm, and rarely has Arturo's abrupt rise to high C sharp in "A te o cara" sounded so effortless. Florez's basic sound is sweet, but he can exclaim excitingly, as he does in the scene from I Capuleti e i Montecchi. And wait until you hear the ditty from Donizetti's Rita! Rarely has singing sounded like so much fun. Conductor Riccardo Frizza leads the orchestra (and chorus) with knowing early 19th-century style. Don't miss this. --Robert Levine

While it was a nice recording your listing is incorrect. The correct composer of "Una furtiva lagrima" is Donizetti, not Bellini. Please review your data.

4 out of 5 stars Una Furtiva Lagrima.......2005-04-12

After hearing the first track ("Allegro io son") on our local station (www.allclassical.org), I immediately bought this album. I was a little nervous that there would only be one good track, but (after listening _many_ times) consider most of the tracks to be "keepers". The title track is very moving, but my personal favorite is "Com'e gentil", for the wonderful match of voice and instrument.

Some of the tracks are a little heavy on the recitative, but the album notes include the translation, which makes it more interesting to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars Juan Over .......2004-09-15

When it comes to reviewing classical music, I feel a little bit like a hillbilly at the opera. I really like it, but I'm not all that sure what's going on. And like that hillbilly at the opera (there aren't any hillbillies out there, reading this are there -- Mammy? Pappy)? I love classical music, but I can't honestly say I know much about it.

What I DO know is that to my untrained ear, Mr. Florez' voice is incredibly beautiful, a pleasure to revel in. Listening to his "Una furtiva lagrima" seems to transport me to another time and place. His voice is warm and tender and seems to soar effortlessly as he hits one high note after another and is worthy of appreciation by fans of any music style.

If you want an album filled with exquisite singing, this would certainly be a fine place to start.

4 out of 5 stars Florez Continues to Impress.......2004-03-24

Too often singers arrive on the musical scene, make one recording, catch the glamour star, only to recede into the background once the initial flourish is made. Not so with Peruvian bel canto tenor Juan Diego Florez. The resounding success of his first album of ROSSINI ARIAS made us hold our breath; could this wonderful new true bel canto tenor hold his own on the stage and on further recordings? Well, yes, he can and has. Not only does he possess a clear, focused, high tenor voice seemingly capable of overcoming any hurdles of power or agility, Juan Diego Florez is a stunning stage presence of handsome bearing. AND he can act with both his body and his head and his voice. UNA FURTIVA LAGRIMA shows Florez in firm control of a broader spectrum of emotional material. True, this selection remains in the bel canto repertoire, but then that is also to his credit, as he is not trying to "sing it all". He has the intelligence to know where his vocal lines are most secure and does not give in to the tendency of foraging into repertoire that could damage his young voice. On this recording there is less distraction from his rather rapid vibrato and more emphasis on the total music line. This CD documents not only a fine tenor currently before the public: it also is a good indicator that he will be around for a long time. Excellent recording, well worth its place in your library.

4 out of 5 stars A CD worth having.......2003-06-17

Keeping more in "tune" with his voice, Juan Diego has recorded an excellent album of great arias. His previous debut album was quite a feast for lovers of high Rossini. This new album gives a feast for just about everyone. It covers a nice range of arias from the beautiful title song to the show-stopping "Mes Amis". Definitely worth buying and enjoying.

Album Description

Martin Mull was actually a musician before he was a standup comedian, and all of his records mix music with his own peculiar brand of skewed irony. And this record, which charted for ABC in 1977, is no exception, Mull riffs in a jazzy, sorta Fats Waller s

5 out of 5 stars Mull at His Best -- A Comedy Classic.......2006-05-18

The Laughcom reissue of this record gives you a chance to hear one of the great comedy albums of all time. This is Mull at his finest during the era of Mary Hartman and Fernwood Tonite. Nearly every song is a gem and the connecting bits in between are very funny, too--especially Rob Reiner as the record exec. And is that Billy Crystal doing the Howard Cosell (sp)? (Guess we'll leave that to historians to figure out.) And, of course, the album contains the cult classic "Men." There are others equally as good, though, including "They Never Met," "I'm Everyone I Ever Loved," "Boogie Man," and "Honor Roll"--the chorus of which cracks me up every time I hear it. Well, let's just say they're all pretty great and this record belongs on the shelf of anyone who loves good comedy. Buy it!

4 out of 5 stars Must-Have Comedy Classic.......2005-12-28

What is amazing about this release is the quality of the musicianship -- Martin is joined by a host of crack LA session men, including Ron Carter, Steve Gadd, Steve Khan, and many other top-notch musicians. It really shows -- each song here is a classic, from the hilarious title track (a Martin Mull love letter to Martin Mull) to the Philly Soul workout "Boogeyman," to the sailing ode "Men" ("throw your rubbers overboard there's no one here but men...."). This one is rare and getting rarer, for some reason no one wants to reissue these classic disks. Please -- re-release his other albums!! As Mull himself would sing -- "I'm right there when I need me and I'm not, when I don't."

5 out of 5 stars They don't make em like this anymore.......2003-04-25

Martin Mull was one of the funniest and most entertaining music/comedy acts of any generation. Ironically, he is best known for his subsequent acting career! At any rate, this is the latest and most accomplished album of his music career and features songs from almost every popular style of music from jazz to country & western to disco to Philly Soul, with Steve Martin and the "Men" song thrown in for good measure. The incredible and hilarious duet with Melissa Manchester on "They Never Met" is worth the price of the album. If only Martin Mull would go back into the studio before it's too late!!! Buy this album, now.

3 out of 5 stars A classic Martin Mull album finally on CD.......2002-09-12

I'm Everyone I've Ever Loved was always my favorite of Martin Mull's ABC albums (though Sex & Violins does have more than a few choice moments), so it's always surprised me that it wasn't available on CD. Well, the fine folks at Laugh.com have made it available (and it's NOT an import, unless California has secretly seceded from the Union), having licenced the album from Universal Music.

The good: Audience favorites "Men" and "The humming song", plus guest appearances by the likes of Tom Waits, Rob Reiner, Robert Klein, and (if I'm not mistaken) Harry Shearer, not to mention musical contributions by the likes of Ron Carter, Melissa Manchester, and Richard Tee.

The bad, or not-quite-as-good: The between-song bits aren't banded (they were on the original LP), full credits and song lyrics aren't included (had Universal chosen to reissue it themselves, they might have had the budget to print a proper booklet with full artwork and whatnot), and the sound quality is a little dull.

Overall, a good chance to hear an underrated comedic talent at one of the peaks of his career.

5 out of 5 stars A fab collection of the loveliest soprano voice ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1.......2005-12-23

First off this two cd set is for the price of one, that is always great.Montserrat caballe is the star of this cdset, and she demonstrates all that is beautiful in singing,on ever track. Her ave maria from othello is included here.It is one of the best performed arias by caballe ever, she ends it with a heavenly piano top note. Also included is her magical casta diva from norma.Caballe sings all these arias with her legendary sound and breath control. On this set there are plenty of examples of long sustained notes, seemless legato, glorious high notes, and magically floated soft notes.Check out the cover to,there are some great photos of Caballe in opera costumes. These cds have great sound, and play for over two hours, too.

5 out of 5 stars LA SUPERBA!.......2005-11-22

Montserrat Caballe is an amazing person and an amazing singer. In my opinion she has a more beautiful voice than Maria Callas. The high notes she reaches are just fantastic! Her Sempre Libera is the best ever! Her Ave Maria is stunning and her Vissi D arte is really moving. Her voice is so beautiful, it's as if it's an angels voice coming from her.

5 out of 5 stars Madame Caballé is great!!!.......2003-04-06

This collection of Caballé's recordings is fantastic! Her soprano is the most beautiful that has been recorded. L. Price, Tebaldi, Ponselle, and a few others have gorgeous voices, but can any of those voices compare with Caballé's? Caballé's singing throughout is of the highest standard. Her "Ave Maria" is spectacular. "Vissi d'arte, vissi d'amore" has never sounded more beautiful. I love her "Non so le tetre immagini". Such beautiful singing does not come any better than this. Her "Caro nome" is disappointing. She is clearly not suited to this aria. "Inflammatus et accensus" is glorious. The later recordings are nice, but they are not the best Caballé has committed to disc. "Il est doux, il est bon" betrays a slight wobble in her otherwise still beautiful voice. "Dopo l'oscuro nembo" features very respectable soft singing from Caballé. This version does not do justice to Bellini's exquisite orchestration. For a version that does, check out Opera Rara's "The Collection: Volume 2". That version features competent singing from an inferior-voiced soprano, but the orchestra is ravishing. The one reviewer who mentioned the aria from "I Vespri Siciliani" as having "fioriture effects Berio could sign on to" is incorrect. The aria included here is not "Mercè, dilette amiche". That aria is more famous and much more florid than the aria included in this collection, "Arrigo, parli a un core". By the way, Caballé performs this aria ravishingly well. This is a superb testament to one of the all-time greats in opera.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing collection!.......2003-04-05

I will write this review objectively, but I will not avoid praising Caballé when praise is due.

First off, this compilation is amazing! I have always thrilled to hearing Caballé's voice and this compilation is no different. I am amazed at Caballé's instrument; such extraordinary purity combined with great power! Even when she sings pianissimo, she can be clearly heard! Her voice literally fills up the room. These arias really show off her remarkable voice. Of special note is her rendition of the hauntingly beautiful "Non so le tetre immagini". Amazing! Her "D'amor sull'ali rosee" is exquisite, but she sings it too softly. Her trill is quite weak. Voices like hers don't respond well to being forced to trill. The tracks from the 1990's show off the remarkable preservation of her voice. The voice retains its purity and beautiful timbre, but is now heavier and darker. "Sempre libera" is not that good. Her coloratura is not up to par with Verdi's demands and she cannot hit the high E-flat at the end. However, she sings the main part of Violetta's aria very well, with supple, gorgeous tone and ravishing pianissimos. "Ah! non credea mirarti" is ravishing, but it is missing its energetic cabaletta. Presumably, it was cut because Caballé could not deal with the coloratura. Caballé's legato lines in this aria are superb. Her version of the "Lucrezia Borgia" Prologue is masterful. Elizabeth's last aria from "Roberto Devereux" is noble and touching. She is not quite Sills, but that aria benefits from a spinto voice instead of a soubrette one. Her aristocratic phrasing is very well used throughout the selections, with a few exceptions. Her "Willow Song" is beautiful, first time on CD. However, she fails to completely show Desdemona's despair. Some parts were good, but the whole thing failed to touch the heart. Her phrasing here is too indulgent. I have to say that I prefer Sutherland's touching version on her "The Art of the Prima Donna" recording. However, I loved "Ave Maria". Caballé sounds most beautiful when singing softly and this selection really shows her in the best light. Her cadenzas are intoxicatingly beautiful. "Caro nome" is not really her aria. The coloratura is suspect and some of the staccati are replaced with upward flourishes. She avoids the last short passage of staccati. Her phrasing in this aria is way too indulgent and she really fails to suggest Gilda's innocence. Even Sutherland is better at portraying Gilda's girlish qualities. Her "Armida" aria has some nice coloratura. She does the runs really well and is fearless in the triplet passages. For some reason, she does not sing the second "fronde" in the first line of the third stanza nor does she sing the last line of this stanza, "i muti abitator". She also does not sing the last line of the fifth stanza, "il tempo vorator". Caballé's first recorded version of "Vissi d'arte, vissi d'amore" is included here. This just may be the most beautiful version of this aria ever recorded. It certainly is Caballé's best version of the aria. The climax is handled in one breath by Caballé. She diminuendos the big high note twice in the same breath. Amazing! The rolling of the "r" in "Signor" after the last diminuendo is quite nasal and reminds us that the sound we are hearing is coming from a human throat. It also shows that these diminuendos are natural and not studio produced. She infuses Tosca's aria with real feeling and piety. The compilation ends with a knockout reading of "Arrigo, parli a un core". Caballé is at her best in this aria. She sings softly to stunning effect. This version may be the most beautiful of this particular aria ever recorded. RCA has done Caballé justice with this wonderful collection. Caballé is truly a remarkable artist with a million-dollar voice. Brava!

4 out of 5 stars Cannot be called an "ultimate" collection.......2003-02-05

This is a prime example of the a major recording label being fickle with the goods, in order to force you to continue buying other recitals and full-length studio recordings. Of course, any Caballe fan would already want to own those other recordings anyway, so the point is moot.

Other reviewers here have cried out against the exclusion of one of her most essential and artistic roles, Imogene from Il Pirata. I would like to emphatically express the same. In fact, I would even have settled for the exclusion of Casta Diva, in favor of Col Sorriso di Innocenza.

Some other stellar recordings not represented her are the Sleepwalking Scene from MacBeth, and Pace, Pace Mio Dio from La Forza del Destino. Also worth mentioning is her O Patria Mia from Aida. She might not be Leontyne Price or Martina Arroyo, but she gives a superb reading of this wonderful aria.

Of course, brevity does require some editing- a true "Ultimate" Caballe collection would span four or five CDs, at least- but to include late-career and less-than-best selections at the expense of others is a crime.

Perhaps the major Opera labels should start letting fans put together the track lists for these "best of" collections! We could do a much better job.

5 out of 5 stars beautiful perfomances of exsquisite madrigals.......2005-10-01

The first 3 books of Gesualdo's madrigals don't have the startling chromaticism and the violent rhythmic contrasts of the 5th and 6th books, but they're rich pieces nonetheless and here and there are hints of the over the top imagination of the later works. These performances are characterized by accurate intonation and lovely timbre. This is one of my favorite recordings of Italian madrigals.

5 out of 5 stars Timelessly Innovative.......2005-12-17

It is well known that this album has inspired many women to enter into the blues music industry. I recently purchased this smart cd-- I am sorry to say that I waited so long to do so. Between the sheer anger of the song "Suffer" to the soul-full desparation of "*4 in the morning", I am completely impressed, and a permanent fan.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!.......2002-12-03

Outstanding! Really made my day. Cathy Jean's not only the best looking female blues singer in the biz, but her voice can make the hair on my back stand up. She and her band got it going on.

5 out of 5 stars Michigan Swing Dance Association!.......2002-02-10

This is another in the fine outings by the very sexy Cathy Jean. The emotion she displays is certainly displayed on the Louisiana style cut, "Unfinished Business". "Leave Me Alone" is a song of an entirely different style being that it's more bluesy in the traditional sense. Dancers will be knocked out by this hard driving tune along with "I'm Your Girl" which is just a bit quicker but with the same power to make you get up and dance.

5 out of 5 stars sophistication and downhome grease.......2001-12-19

Cathy Jean is a singer/songwriter out of Baltimore, Maryland. This is her second CD, and her sound has moved towards a sophisticated blues and rock, with some contemporary influences. She has a voice that is well suited to this eclectic approach, capable of crooning in one song, and belting out a hard shuffle in the next. The music kicks off with "Be Glad", a hard shuffle, followed by the title track, a crisp blues rocker. Cathy and band then move into some jazzy funk in "**4 in the Morning**", a little of the Bo Diddley beat in "Unfinished Business", then back into the funk with "How Many". "Leave Me Alone" is a rocker with a definate soul feel, which gives way to "Why Don't You See Me", a jazzy ballad. The band then cranks out a sharp shuffle, that recalls the 70's Albert Collins sound, followed by "Please Stop Seeing That Girl", a funky acoustic blues that showcases yet another facet of Cathy Jean's voice. Dancers in the crowd are served next with the catchy rocking blues, "I'm Your Girl", then comes the sultry "See You Tomorrow", and the acoustic country-blues of "Blues Singin' Alcoholic". Next up is the New Orleans style rocker, "I Want Your Mother To Know/Rotten B." which Cathy belts out with authority. This CD closes with a nice slow blues and a gospelish blues that is a inventive synthesis of genres. SUMMARY: Cathy Jean has come up with an energetic set of blues, jazz and contemporary-blues that fits the 90's to a T. She has real fire in her voice, and all of the music here is driven by a genuine sense of passion that makes the songs literally jump out at you from the speakers. A great mix of sophistication and downhome grease. --Al Handa, Delta Snake Daily Blues

It's a cerebral record, but Kittin herself is such a natural tease you hardly care how much skill is involved: you'd rather grab a French-to-English dictionary to find out what salacious bits you can translate on songs like "3eme Sexe." Sophisticated and incorrigible, I Com's detached sensuality is tough to resist. --Matthew Cooke

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Solo Album.......2006-02-15

With twinges of Warp Records, Punk, and Depeche Mode, this electro album is worthy of any fan of Miss Kittin.

3 out of 5 stars Is That All There Is?.......2005-10-11

No one can be miss kittin...
And no better that her to be a featured artist...
Miss Kittin & The Hacker....What a breathtaking electroclash couple...Miss kittin & felix da Housecat....Both made the best unforgiven era of contemprary glittery retro electro music with their 2001 "Kittinz & The Glitz"...Miss kittin & Golden Boy: Wild couple with a soft disguise ..With Sven Vath..They invented robotised music..but Miss Kittin Alone...I doubt it

I mean after being with these talented electro pioneers and kept joining forces that resulted very manipulative albums that every electroclash fan should buy...What do I GET? A big mass distortion of unorganised sounds that sounded very common and out of style in other times...
All trackes are okay or less...for me...the entire cd (with the exception of track one & two) misses some character of favourite kitten ...It's like a nearly talented artist made this and subjected it as a first experiance....
This is way too far for continous hearing and falling in love with....
Although I'm still a big fan of kittin...I DESCRIBE THIS AS A BIG SPOT ON HER CAREER ....If You're a collector...get it ...If not, trust me....Go to her "First Album" with The Hacker.

4 out of 5 stars What's New Pussycat?.......2004-08-29

I first heard Miss Kittin (or Caroline Herve) on Felix Da Housecat's album `Kittenz and Thee Glitz' where her deadpan vocals dominated `Silver Screen Shower Scene', the best song on that album. She is also from that same electroclash scene as Chicks on Speed and Tiga.

`I Com' is her second album and is more club-friendly then her previous outing. The beats are more in your face and her sense of irony is stronger, with track 2 `Requiem for a Hit' in particular standing out. First half of the album is excellent, it does takes some more listens to get into the second half. Another good reason for owning this album is the inclusion of the video for `Professional Distortion'. An album for the suicidegirls.com generation.

1 out of 5 stars so many good music out there, why wasting our time and money.......2004-08-16

As somebody else wrote earlier, it is so much great music out there that these I.Com tracks sound awfully poor and dry to me; maybe if that album would have appeared in the 90s it'd have sounded slightly more surprising, but just a few weeks before Björk releases Medulla, and definitely late after the Chicks on Speed albums (and without even 10% of their musical imagination) Miss Kittin with her new release is making electronic music sound like a joke, and conceived for people who never heard about Warp, Rephlex and the intelligent vast worlds of true electronica. To avoid.

5 out of 5 stars Miss Music.......2004-08-04

She was the voice of Hacker and Felix, but i prefer she like the voice of Miss Kittin!
A real good CD with only nice tracks.
At the beginnig the sound is too similar to the new one of Felix (Davin Dazzle e the Neon Fever, another nice album in anycase!) but one you arrive into the Allergic, Soundtrack of Now, Dubt about me and Clone me (Techno ghotic dark) the sounds become more electronic (sounds likes more Herbert or Dani Siciliano).
My personal favorite songs is Happy Violentine.
Very particular I come.com (psychedelic technology lonely song)
A tribute to the French language in 3eme secle (another similar with the CD of Felix where the French tribute is with Romantique...).
But even with all this "her music history" the final resoult of the CD it's great : she has her identity, special in the lyrics where she demonstrate her volonty of freedom and anarchy far from the studios and media.
My cd has a bonus video of Professional Distortion (the hit).
If you like this Cd i suggest also the Felix da Housecat (Davin Dazzle e the Neon Fever) and Dani Siciliano (Likes)you will pass a nice summer with good music

5 out of 5 stars The singing is as good as the comedy on the Smothers Brothers' fifth album.......2007-04-20

"It Must Have Been Something I Said!" was the fifth Smothers Brothers album, released in 1964, back when Tom and Dick were "America's great unstrung heroes." As the liner noted by Jinx Kragen remind us, this was a time when the boys had "clowned and sung their way through hundreds of concerts" and with each appearance were winning "new friends for their deliciously irreverent approach to music." Produced as always by David Carroll, the album was recorded at The Ice House in Pasadena, California and offers up these eleven tracks:

1. "Slithery Dee" (0:32)
2. "Hiawatha" (9:25)
3. "The Shrimp" (1:03)
4. "Crabs Walk Sideways" (5:10)
5. "Michael, Row the Boat Ashore" (1:58)
6. "Civil War Song" (2:11)
7. "Jenny Brown" (5:05)
8. "Black is the Color of My True Love's Hair" (4:14)
9. "Population Explosion" (1:33)
10. "Anne Marie and Jean Pierre" (1:42)
11. "Carnival" (6:12)

For this album the Brothers Smothers made a effort to include more serious songs. The B side of their second album, "The Two Sides of the Smothers Brothers," consisted of studio recordings of songs such as "The Four Winds and the Seven Seas" and the "Sailor's Lament," and their ninth album would be all about "The Smothers Brothers Sing it Straight" (almost). But I have a preference for their singing on stage, accompanied just by Tom's guitar and Dick's fat friend. The boys proved they could sing on their first album when they did a beautiful duet of "Down in the Valley." On this album they top themselves with an exquisite version of "Black is the Color of My True Love's Hair," their haunting harmonies making us forget that only two albums earlier they had turned the song into a comic take off on the Miss Clairol "Does She...or Doesn't She?" commercials. Equally strong is there version of "Carnival," the theme from the movie "Black Orpheus," once you get past Tommy's thoughts on kibbutzes. But that is the charm here: One minute Dick is trying to reign in Tommy and the next they are signing a song and convincing us they could have totally madet it as "just" folk singers.

"Michael Row the Boat Ashore" is also done simply and straight, as is "Anne Marie and Jean Pierre." But you always have to watch out that the boys are going to go for laughs at some point, as they do in the two Shel Silverstein songs, "Slithery Dee" and "Civil War Song." The best examples of this practice on this particular album would be "Crabs Walk Sideways," the song about the star-crossed lovers Sally the lobster and Herman the crab where the audience is exhorted to really sing the chorus, and "Jenny Brown," the tragic tale of the lovely "teen-angel" who turns out to have "a rotten sense of humor." There are also quick bits as Tom tries to start a new dance craze called "The Shrimp," and shares his practical solution to the "Population Explosion." After all, this is the album where Tommy explains to his brother, "Words to me are a play thing," which is has been my personal philosophy ever since.

The centerpiece of the album is the longest track, "Hiawatha," which takes the subject of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's famous poem and turns it into a song about the young Indian warrior "going from poverty to puberty" and hunting a bunny rabbit. Along the way Tommy explains why he is "sore at the Indians" and introduces the song "in Indian" (as in that fake Indian language spoken in countless westerns). Kragen asserts that Tommy's "befuddled interpretation of American History is one that even Big Chief Sitting Bull would love," but since Tommy says the Sitting Bull is a "stupid name," I doubt that would really be the case. However, I always did like Tommy's idea that the Indians knew exactly what they were doing when they introduced tobacco to the white settlers. Still, it is strange to look back at this particular routine, especially knowing what would happen by the end of the decade to the Smothers Brothers and their controversial show on CBS, and reconsider it from contemporary concerns of political incorrectness where you are off base as soon as you call Native Americans "Indians." At least I think you will find the humor to be relatively benign.

When "Curb your tongue, knave!" came out on CD in 2002 from Laugh.com I thought it would be the start of the quick release of all of the Smothers Brothers albums on CD. But it took two years for "Aesop's Fables the Smothers Brothers Way" to come out, and now we have had to wait for 2007 to get this third album. Of course I have all eleven of the Smothers Brothers albums on vinyl, but I do not own a record player anymore so a fat lot of good that does me. I would hate to think that there is an arithmetic progression at work here and that we will have to wait four more years for the next SmoBro CD. At that rate it will be the year 2065 before we have all of the albums out, at which point we would have to wait another dozen years for Dick Smothers' solo album "It's a Saturday Night at the World." The Smothers Brothers have set the mark as the longest running comedy team in history, but at the start of their second half-century together you have to admit that they are not going to be around in another fifty years. It would be nice if all of their albums were out on CD while the boys are still out on the road.
