Editorial Reviews
With this delicious double-disc investigating deep trance to the earthiest degree, Dutchman Sander Kleinenberg proves himself a rare and true gem in the ever-expanding world of DJs and producers. Every track he touches becomes imbued with an expert's sense of love and levity. But the real excitement here is supplied by Kleinenberg's ear for music. Subsequently, his track selection is never anything less than genuinely enthralling: Mike Vandenberg's "Spooky," a scintillating update on Harold Faltermayer; Virtuoso's almost tantric blast of energy, "Stay With Me;" and his own eerie Moroder-esque twister, "Hidden Agenda." Kleinenberg's enthusiastic energy on this seamless mix of trance, techno, and funky house also subtly complements the mood of the music. Witness the way Audiomontage's "Fly Baby" cruises before slipping into the fast lane with East West Connection's punchy dance-floor motions on "Once I've Been There," or even the gleefully assaultive partnership of Marc O'Tools's "Stauffenberg" and Pariah's "Keep the Peace." Everyone knows names like Nick Warren and John Digweed, but this guy is only just scratching the surface of mainstream fame. Buy this set, give him a year, and know that Sander Kleinenberg will be one of the world's top DJs. --Steffan Chirazi

As the world of house music slowly expands to include styles beyond its boys 'n' decks caste, British-born, globe-trekking DJ Lee Burridge mightily shows his skills as genre-buster on this double CD. It's hard to pin down the exact points in style that have landed Burridge as a progressive house star, but his fondness for tracks rife with ambient drones, popping breakbeats, house hypnotics, humorous spoken-word snippets, and acid house saturation help define his sound. Burridge just has damn good taste in tracks.Nubreed takes off with Marshall Jefferson's "Mushrooms" (which discusses the joys of natural psychedelics), leading into the disc's rather monotonous thoroughfare of repetitive groove and unfortunately bland styles. Photek's sideways-slamming "Glamourama" adds a bit of alien intrigue, while Axus's "When I Fall," with its stabs of ominous-sounding synth, has an intriguing darkness to it. But mostly, the first disc is on hold.
The second disc ups the ante, offering deeper, more freakish sounds atop butt-flexing beats. "Are you shitting me?" someone asks in the swirling Moroccan fantasy of John Delirious's "Orange Eyes" as beats recoil like snake charmers on parade. The liquid breakbeats of Leroj's echoing "Stickman" are like airborne sonic booms panning in larger-than-life stereo. Percussion plays a big role, and Burridge favors hard-ricocheting tracks in his trademark mixes. A woman hollers, "Let me go, you bastard, let me go!" in Wally Lopez's schizo "Patricia Never Leaves the House," a wonderfully weird blend of vocal manipulation and wave-crashing beats and sounds. The set ends with Plantastic's "Artifacts," which brings it back home with a militaristic house beat, swooping hi-hats, robot hand-claps, and a "Tubular Bells"-worthy keyboard riff. For shaking up the scene, Nubreed is a breed apart. --Ken Micallef

Good Thing There Are Two CD's in This Compilation.......2007-03-17
Taking this into consideration, it is not surprising he would try to develop his own sound and style when featured on a Global Underground label release.
However, I'm not sure what he was going for with the set featured on disc 1. I never knew so many like-sounding dreary tracks existed. Don't get this confused with deep and dark progressive house music because it is not even close. Disc 1 is a lot of noise with three or so narrative tracks (ie. track 1-Mushrooms by Marshall Jefferson) thrown in for "good" measure. Play a set like this in a club full of people who paid a hefty cover charge and you will have a very angry mob on your hands...unless they are all comatosed on opiates. It truly is aweful.
Thankfully, disc 2 focuses on what actually works with a successful electronica set. It still is creative and the tracks are predominantly dark progressive house. A bit monotonous overall but can definitely gel with the right mood.
Disc 1 gets my first 1/5 stars ever given! Disc 2 pulls through with 4/5 stars.
Is is worth buying this album for disc 2 alone? Probably not.
Excellent.......2002-08-12
Something different.......2002-07-27
Lee has done something different here. He's created a deep groove, but has done it with fresh songs, combining styles like house/prog/breaks (although not much in the way of breaks) to make something that doesnt sound like any other compilation of 2000-2001-2002. Its a mix filled with funky songs, groovy bass lines, and interesting break downs.
If you're a fan of progressive house, owning mixes by Digweed or any of the other NuBreed releases, and you like a dark groove, this is for you. Its a quality mix.

Outside the Kleinenberg Box...Halfway at Least.......2007-05-27
Saying this, I was unbelievably overjoyed with Disc 1 of this album. It still remains one of my favorite compilations to date. He wonderfully builds up the tempo with sleek progressive house tracks and skillfully shifts into darker progressive trance to finish the set off. Kleinenberg clearly embraces his UK influences with his track selection for disc 1.
Disc 2 is more of what I expect to hear when I think of Sander Kleinenberg. Not the first half of the CD, buy definitely the second half. Midway through disc 2 his track selection charts familiar territory. An overabundance of spacey sounding techno and hard progressive trance tracks that seem to blend into one long and mundane track. I lose interest here.
Disc 1 gets 5/5 stars and in my opinion is worth the cost of the album on its own. Disc 2 gets 3/5 stars but rarely gets air time at my place.

Beyond Bliss!.......2006-05-29
Words fall short describing this extraordinary 'THING', Sander Kleinenberg has put together. The songs emit solid energy rite from the word go, mixing into higher echelons... making you feel ecstatically elevated once every while.
Needless to mention the somewhat magically compiled tracklist. Each song sounds like a gem here, or maybe its the masterful mixing of Kleinenberg. The songs somehow just mix into each other without a trace.... you know just FUSE into each other!
I love Pvd, Ferry, Nick Warren, Dave Seaman, Lawler, Sasha and the likes.... BUT I haven't heard anything like this from anyone of them before.
yeah... its that good!
A MUST buy for anyone who appreciates music in general. or even for the noobs who wanna show off some club action at their local bbq.

CD 2: 5 stars
This mix is my first Sander K compilation and boy did it come out of left field and knock me on my butt. The entire set is put together differently than most sasha/digweed types out there. It is more focused on beats and how they combined together. Sander K does an awesome job of making the experience a roller coaster ride. First the set starts off slow and builds. Then bam! You're thrown into this blend of clean and rhythmic beats. Pretty soon you can't stop tapping your foot and nodding your head. NuBreed is always a mix you can come back to months later and still have awe and appreciation for it. A pure classic.
solid as expected.......2004-08-14
Renaissance Presents Everybody"
So, I decided to check out his earlier work and as I expected it was excellent. He has become one of my favorite djs now. Considering I am more into Goa trance, I was impressed with his abilities to perfectly blend together an awesome progressive mix. Highly, recommended. This mix is not as mellow as "
Renaissance Presents Everybody" and it has that dark deep sound to it.

Solid Tribal House.......2007-04-13
Steve Lawler stuck with what he knows and mixes best...deep and tribal progressive house music. Other reviewers likened his track selection to Danny Tenaglia's and I think that this is a fair comparison for the most part. Lawler tends to lean towards the darker flavors, but both DJ's have a love for tribal drum loops. The negative reviews for this album are mostly from trance purests. This compilation definitely steers wide of this genre of electronica.
I liked most of the track selections used by Lawler, but I'm with the other reviewers that this compilation could have been excellent without the inclusion of a couple of narrative tracks...and especially the multiple sexual inuendo tracks that unfortunately made Lawler's list. Come on, good electronica is sexy for the music and beats alone...you don't need cheesey tracks that include vocals and lirics that mimic sex and organisms! Tasteless.
Despite this, I like both discs equally and consider this album a success. On top of this, the album has aged well since its release.
Both disc 1 and disc 2 get 4/5 stars from me.

Its all about the drums: great, chunking pro. house/tribal.......2002-10-22
And fear not, for those not familiar with the various genres, I don' mean by "tribal" some kind of world music. No this is deep house or progressive house, with the multiple drums sounds, piled on, hence "tribal".
Lawler has a unique sound that is focused on plenty of mid to high range sound in the mix, that emphasis the whoosh, grind, and tick of the percussive elements, and a deep boom that creates a sharp in your face sound that hooks you in. There is not alot of keyboard or fill in or sound effects, although there is a judicious use of vocal samples here and there.
The knock against Lawler is that his brand of house/tribal to sound the same or wear thin over two discs, and there is some truth to that. Certainy if you are "waiting" for a keyboard break, vocals, or some melodic element--or worse, some peak anthemic moment--it won't come. But if you give into the tick, whump and pulse of Lawler's drum groove you won't regret it. Another mistake is to play this too low, its requires volume to appreciate the unique sound of Lawler. It demands your attention and just won't work in the background. There is little point me going track by track here, as we are dealing with a wall of beats, the source becomes immaterial.
Lawler is the king of this subgenre of progressive house, nothing else in your collection sounds like it, and you should definitely buy if you are any kind of dance or club music fan. This particular GU set is also less quirky and more accessible than the most recent Lawler collection "Lights Out", so start here.

Another DJ out of John Digweed's Bedrock school, Britain's Danny Howells has been given one of the more prominent platforms available right now to those in his line of work, a release on the Global Underground label. His mix is an energetic blend of choppy trance or smooth house, depending on your definitions, but one thing is clear--this man has good taste and a frightening focus on dance-floor flow. Playing with the rise-and-fall dreamscape of trance, Howells works with a house music aesthetic in that he starts in hard with a beat and never really drops it out of the mix, especially on the first disc. His ingredients are a mish-mash of DJ colorings, incorporating DJ Dan's subwoofer-destroying house anthem "Put That Record On" on the first disc, and the glowstick waver "All Exhale" from Luke Slater on the second. But he never really tips his hand one way or the other, somehow managing to create a satisfying and relentless record for fans of house, trance, or both. --Matthew CookeAlbum Description

Danny Howells is undoubtedly one of the UK's brightest stars. Not a Bad Global Underground Debut.......2007-06-24
Saying this I was a little disappointed with Howells' Global Underground debut. Overall it is still a good album, but I was expecting a little more. This has to do with the Nubreed series itself as the featured DJ's seem to overdo their quest in defining their own signature sound.
Disc 1 is the better of the two. Not highly innovative, but it works, therefore nothing to be overly critical about either.
Disc 2 can get tiresome within a short period of time. Not nearly to the extent that Lee Buridge did on his Nubreed release, but you quickly get a sense that Howells was out to distinguish himself from the rest of the crowd a little too much with this set. Don't despair because he makes up for this common Nubreed shortcoming with his future Global Underground releases.
Keep you eye and ears on this guy. He continues to rise in rank on my personal favorite DJ list. Don't miss him live if you ever get the chance.
Disc 1 gets 4/5 stars and Disc 2, 3/5 stars.
Howells is a worthy heir to Digweed.......2003-01-17
The best of the NuBreed Series.......2001-11-08
Mantaining his truest passion of music on the deeper edge, he does it without driving so deeply the music does not progress or drive harder as the piece goes on. By this I mean he combines music he seems to truly love rather than try to put together the darkest comp he can(like so many others are doing)just to avoid being grouped with trance dj's.(A genre many consider to be a four letter word)
My most honest and sincere recomendation for anyone who truly loves music from classical to bluegrass, and from jazz to jam bands.

Each disc features tracks that reflect the darker side of both the progressive house and progressive trance genres. Neither disc enters that hard and unrelenting tempo and beat that so many of GU's previous albums do.

Stunning programming, one of the best mixes of the era.......2006-10-28
The first thing one notices about Pappa's mix is its dark overtones. This is one of the first mixes in the progressive style of 2000, where bright synth sounds have generally disappeared, replaced by a soundworld mainly concentrated in the bass range with little jabs at higher registers. Sound scary and dull? It's quite effective here, never showing the blandness of subsequent mixes like Digweed's LA release in the Global Underground series. Moonface was one of the first producers in this style, and two of his tracks are present here. Pappa's mixing is solid, but he does nothing amazing with the ProTools technology Boxed Records provides, unlike, say, Sasha in his IBIZA release. The programming is really what makes this mix great.
The first disc starts off with Narkotik's "Conditions". We move through a variety of sounds with Moonface's "Synchronized Knowledge", Two Right Wrongans' "Sorry Mate, You Got the Wrong House" (one of 2000's standout tracks), and the James Holden remix of Timo Maas Pres Mad Dog's "Better Make Room". The only overt vocals of the whole mix come towards the end of the first disc. There's Sloth & Dormant's "Here And Now (Ebe remix)", Trancesetter's "Roaches", Odessi's wild "Moments of Space", and Nova's "Welcome To The Future (Humate mix)". Pappa uses these vocal tracks not as a sappy attempt at a climax, but more to show off different timbres in order to offset the weight of the bass.
With the second disc, something downright magical happens. While the first disc explores many moods, the programming of the second concentrates all the elements of this style Pappa prefers. To make a comparison with modern classical music, which I started listening to after house, the set is like Lutoslawski's Second Symphony with its first "Hesitant" movement and then its focused "Direct" second movement. Two tracks by Chab and Moonface respectively provide a setup, and then from GF's "Burning Man (Gee Shock remix)" through ASAP's "Heavy Water" it's pure energy. Cass' "Emotion Surfer (Hyperion remix)" is a stunner, and I'm only left wondering why this great track wasn't put on more compilations. Astral Projection's "Liquid Sun" appears here in a remix by Cass & Slide Remix, the trippy sound one would expect from this producer turned into fantastic progressive.
Toward the end of the second disc the cooldown comes when Pappa introduces breaks, first with Hybrid's "Theme from Wide Angle". This Dark Skies remix is quite different from the version that appeared on WIDE ANGLE, almost sounding like a different track altogether before the twangy guitars come in. The mix ends with the stunning ten-minute "Lydian and the Dinosaur" by Hi-Fi Bugs, one of Phil K's monikers.
Pappa actually went fairly downhill after the real of this album, starting to mix lots of cheesy vocals and rock-music remixes into his sets. NUBREED001 is the culmination of his early period and a stunning tour of a great era. Do check it out if you enjoy progressive house.

Boxed Records, which has built legions of loyal followers by marshaling the world's best-known trance DJs for their Global Underground series, now look to mine a new generation of mixologists bubbling just under the surface. This first double-CD entry in the Nu-Breed series, featuring Italian-Australian DJ Anthony Pappa, incorporates a darker, more house-oriented sound than most of the GU releases, and it admirably stays away from any obvious glow-stick-waving anthems. Even while Pappa's mix does, without a doubt, adhere to the trance code that has served others of his ilk so well, there's a progressive, genre-skipping resourcefulness that provides snap and crackle to the beats. Check out the tinny grooves and electronic funk of Moonface's "Overactive" on the second CD, which morphs beautifully into the industrial tinges of Humate's "Burning Man" off German's underground Superstition label, or the ultradeep trance of Austin Leeds's "Rhythm Reigns" as it burrows deeply under your sweat-drenched skin. Talented, nameless shadow-men lurk behind turntables in clubs all over the world. Pappa, however, after this dreamy and admirable effort, should soon find his name on everyone's lips. --Matthew CookeCustomer Reviews:

2 years on, still has the power to move and drag you in..........2003-07-19
So complex in it's intentions and so profound in it's progression, this album will initially have you reeling. Much of the credit must, of course, go to the originators of the tracks actually used here but it's Pappa's blending of them into a totally seamless, flowing, liquid vibe that most impresses.
There is nothing on this album that is even remotely commercial, yet almost all of it is essential. So underground that it's almost kissing Lenin, 'Nu-Breed' tracks an artist at the absolute peak of his creativity. Combining equal parts dirty sex, disturbed ramblings, unadulterated fun and razor edged humour, Pappa manages to define Progressive House with this album (and that's no easy feat!).
In future years, when they look to the sound that was 2000/1, this album will be the explanation. Highly recommended.
