Product Description
"Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent This quote illustrates what this album is about. It is about violence -- human violence, to be precise. It is ever-present and, in varying degrees, ingrained in all of us. Just like wood grain, violence is inherent to our nature, but the question is, what factors determine who lets is show through and how does it show itself? The same questions haunt the protagonist of An Absence of Empathy. He is a curious individual who wants to know why the media is filled with news about murder, rape and war -- and he is afraid that he might have the potential for violence himself. He starts to research the subject, but it isnt enough. It cant show him what motivates the person that acts violently or what plagues them, and it doesnt make him feel the pain of the victims. His desire to understand one of humanitys most basic traits leads to a series of vivid dreams dreams that appear to be so real that he cant escape this dreamworld until it is all over. In them, he becomes the killer, he becomes the rapist, he becomes the soldier, he becomes the mother crying for her daughter who was raped. The first song introduces the theme and illustrates how our main character is plagued by his questions about humanitys major flaw. He starts a journey into the minds of other people to experience violence firsthand. At the end of the album, he draws his own conclusions, and asks himself if there is nothing else to us besides hurting each other. The answer he finds is worthy of discovery. An Absence of Empathy takes you into the psyche of several different people who are either experiencing or acting out violence. Each form of violence is dealt with in two songs, each one shedding light on a different point view of the scenario. For example, one song illustrates a torture scene from the point of view of the torturer; its counterpoint takes you into the same room, this time from the point of view of the tortured. Another pairing is about violence in schools. One song deals with a teacher using psychological violence towards his students (who then rebel), while the other song is about a school shooting.Customer Reviews:
Another dark journey... Yawn........2007-05-18
My biggest complaints are these: many of the songs repeat the chorus or the tag line over and over and over... almost as though they didn't know what else to say. Plus, this is a really dark album. Okay, psycho killer captures victim(s) and tortures them to death. Great. Nice stretch. Really brightened my day. Finally, much of the music never built up enough momentum... sometimes a song would start out with a nice hook or a great intro, only to stagnate and grow repetetive later on - never fulfilling the promise.
This album is like a Terrantino film, without any of the humor. Some of the songs are listenable (if you avoid the dark message). Just One More (song 2) was a bit of a highlight for me. However, overall, this CD won't be played much anymore (I listened to it 4 times).
I give it a generous 3 stars because there are a couple nice hooks and a couple of unexpected surprises - after a lot of repetitive choruses. I'm not trying to offend anyone, but Skid Row is MUCH better than this.
One Word - Wow!.......2006-12-09
While the lyrics are dark and sometimes disturbing, the songs will still win you over. A perfect example is the song "I Killed You" where a man finds his lover with another man and shoots both of them. Terrible, terrible story, but the music / vocals overwhelm the listener.
This CD is much different that Frameshifts previous CD with Dream Theater's James LaBrie on vocals. That CD, good in it's own rights, had a more ethereal sound, while "Empathy" is more "in your face" rock.

V2.Album Details
The Fourth and Final Album from the Trip Hop Duo of Nicola Hitchcock and Saul Freeman who Managed to Build a Strong Following in the Final Years of the 20th Century and the First Years of the New Century. Unfortunately, it all Fell Apart and Each Went their Separate Ways. But You Can Still Enjoy this Masterpiece as Well as their Three Previous Albums. Similar in Nature to Portishead, but Arguably a Cut Above.Customer Reviews:
Nothing short of brilliance.......2006-10-19
Exquisite "Empathy".......2004-11-29
It starts off with the string-led ballad "This Life," before heading off into softer, dreamier territory, such as the trippy, sensuous "Flowers Bloom" ("Kisses my shoulder/Cradles his body/Behind mine/Shin to toe to thigh to mind..."), the airy piano ballad "Insensible," and the wistful "Beautiful." Only a few have sharper electronic sounds, like the bouncy trip-hop "Kissing the Day."
"Empathy" leans a bit more on the trip-hop than the pop edge, with a bit of symphonic grandeur mixed in with the horns and strings (or electronic approximations of them). This is definitely music to slow-dance to -- the sweet tone and abundance of love songs demands it.
Hitchcock's voice is the centerpiece of Mandalay. Her singing is a bit trembly and very sweet, like a lost child; the wispy vocals in "Insensible" add to the feel of frightened innocence. And her songs are well-suited -- they're a bit high-school-love-poetry in their simplicity, but they are quite pretty, especially when they stay simple. "Do you know you're beautiful?/You are, yes you are, you are," has an oddly touching resonance.
But if Hitchcock is the centerpiece, then Saul Freeman's electronic production is the flowers that cover the centerpiece. He manages a downtempo, almost jazzy sound, but switches over to soundscapes that stop just short of being epic, and the cascading electronica of "Kissing the Day." Samples of church bells are patched in, and what sounds like muted brass and violins.
Mandalay left on a high note in "Empathy" a truly beautiful album that seems all the more poignant because it was their last. Beautiful, mellow and sweet, this is a definite must-listen.

Why you haven't heard of this group........2001-10-29
If you like Portishead, you probably have already heard some of these songs. There is a "bootleg" album, called "PEARL" which is actually Mandalay. The style is the same, but the artists are very different. And in my opinion, Mandalay is much better.
These songs are worth the price: they're impossible to find and they are incredible otherwise. Buy it, listen to it, spread the word. Mandalay the musical group is completely here to stay.

The jazz wisdom regarding Bill Evans's relationship to drummers is that only Philly Joe Jones could light a bona fide rhythmic fire beneath the often mellow, circuitous pianist. But here California-cool-identified rhythm ace Shelly Manne shows both intimate knowledge of Evans's modus operandi and a keen manner for destabilizing the picture enough to drive uncommonly hard-swinging trio interplay. This two-fer collects both dates Manne played with Evans--and bassists Monty Budwig (on Empathy in 1962) and longtime trio member Eddie Gomez (on A Simple Matter of Conviction in 1966)--and the pairing makes great sense. Not only did Manne push the trio to new places, but Evans yanked Manne into a kind of ultrasensitive spot, too, engaging the drums and ride cymbals so that they sound harmonic and melodic. The net result is hair-raising in its exactness and a pleasure to hear. --Andrew BartlettCustomer Reviews:
A different taste..........2007-06-13
Brilliant Evans.......2004-11-16
Evans' playing on this album (6 cuts) range from the joyful, ebulliant, to the pensive, moody Evans we often associate with him. "With a Song in My Heart" and "Washington Twist" (by Irving Berlin, no less), are bouncing, joyful outings, as are "I Believe in You" and "Let's Go Back to th e Waltz". The two ballads, "Goodbye" and "Danny Boy" are a combination of one-note and brilliant chordal playing, with clusters and complex, two-handed chords, all the while with soaring melodies. "Danny Boy" is notable for its sad, lonely aura, while "Goodbye" has some very forceful, bluesy playing by Evans.
I think this is Bill Evans at his best. No fan, or novice, should consider his collection complete until they have listened to this at least once. You won't be sorry!!
A simple matter of monster talents!.......2002-07-24
Really, trust me, these two albums are wonderful. Buy this piece of jazz history.

Draconis Blackthorne, my fanny!.......2006-03-04
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Killing_an_Arab
Personally, I give Thomas Thorn & Co. a little more
credit for irony, tongue in cheek, etc. Also, Middle
Eastern oil magnates more perfectly display the
Satanic sensibilities EHC espouse, than the stupid
little Americans with cute gothy pen names
sitting around writing "reviews".
Part 1: Dude Commenting On "Killing An Arab "Before me/ Part 2 : I Saw Electric Hellfire Club Live 1998.......2005-10-31
Also, I saw EHC live when I was like 18 back in 1998 in Milwaukee at The Rave. I had the privelege of being in the front row area and was about 3-4 feet away from Thomas Thorn singin. I remember, he had devil horns on and his head was no longer bald, but had a mop of blond-browsn tangled hair and was dressed in all leather and had goatee beard. During his Mr 44 song he held up a christian bible and tore it up and lit in on a fire. Im not sure what he did i think it was put in a pit or sumthin, and he threw remenents of it to the crowd and I was lucky enough to have caught like 3 parts of the torn burnt bible. He mesmerized the crowd, including myself with his presence and power and you could tell he was a poser or phony when it came to his Satanic beliefs. After the show I wanted meet him up close and talk to him or sumthin cuz I admired him. So he sat down and i got a few autographs on the torn papers of the bible he threw and also shook his hand. I forget what other keepsakes I got from the show . but I enjoyed seein him live after bein a fan for a long time.
Great Holiday Musick!.......2004-05-18
A smiling Jack-o-Lantern adorns the cover, placed on the customized EHC Baphomet. Inside, elucidating liner notes, a veritable essay & evolutionary prognostication by Reverend Thomas Thorn, as to the future development of the band.
Here, some of the all-time classics of infamy are covered in a playfully diabolical way, from horror movies to devilish Heavy Metal & Gothic bands demonized by xoids, which ignited much of the furor in the highly satanophobic 80's.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Disc One
1. Sympathy For The Devil
The Rolling Stones classic, said to be the first Rock'N'Roll song to fully anknowledge The Prince of Darkness as Lucifer, "Minister of Music" --- the song to which a veritable sacrifice, a blood ritual baptism occurred in Altamont, CA, where Hell's Angels took their prey.
2. Killing The Arab
As it was related to this writer, a Cure cover which may vent against Circle-K or 7-11 vendors, or Middle-Eastern oil embargos; whether or not it is a misconception, generally referring to all people of Middle-Eastern descent as "arabs", which they are obviously not. Keep in mind that this is a cover song, so the lyrical content may not be necessarily shared by EHC, but may have in fact been posted by one Robert Smith.
3. Highway To Hell
AC/DC classic which celebrates the indulgent & passionate ride to the swirling Abyss, & was also a favorite of The Nightstalker Richard Ramirez, & Myself. Do the bells toll for thee?
4. Shout At The Devil
A headbanging good time is promised with this one, with a delighful twist; a cavalcade of sounds. The original recording is also part of My collection.
5. Devil Inside
Underrated song by INXS, which reminds that the Devil is indeed "within every single one of us..." --- the Lust of Life, lest humanimality forget......
Michael Hutchins, singer for INXS, killed himself in an auto-erotic attempt to an incredible neo-necrogasm. For this, I can see the image of Hutchins crucified, with the name of the band written above the cross, in place of "INRI".
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Disc 2
1. Halloween Medley {first time on CD} / 2. Halloween Theme
A familiar variation written by John Carpenter for his landmark movie by the same name. Before this release, this Halloween medley became a Samhein regular at shows. Just as eerie, with a drumbeat added.
3. Incubus
From 'Kiss The Goat' {this Author's favorite EHC release}, which I came into possession under a red night sky, 'Incubus' is the lingam kundalini unleashed upon the ethers by the Passions of Pan & Priapus.
4. Bela Lugosi's Dead
A Bauhaus cover - gives recognition to one of the progenitors of Gothic Rock, & a tribute to the silver screen's most infamous horror actor who played the most infamous horror character, Dracula. Lugosi so personafied the portrayal, he was even buried in his cape-- now that's dedication!
Despite the flack this song has received as being identified with "gothabe's" {goth-wanna'be poseurs who are 'bad bunnies' looking for cheap thrills by merely dressing in black, thus diluting the underground scene}, EHC adds a nice touch with this version.
5. Black No. 1
The cover song of another one of this Author's favorite bands, Type 0 Negative {especially "Bloody Kisses", "October Rust", & "Slow, Deep & Hard"}; I really enjoyed this version.
6. Incubus reprise
Another version of that great 'Kiss The Goat' song.
I enjoyed the way the songs blended & bled together, giving the senses delightful surprises, as one gently overlaps the other like satano-sonic waves.
The one song that I enjoyed most on this double-CD set was undoubtably #6/Disc 1: "The Bishop's Folly", which is an EHC original. And if this is any indication of what is to come {which in fact, it is}, then there surely is a lot to expect.
Hardcore EHC fans will want this in their collections, but for the novice & unfamiliar to the band, you may wish to first purchase "Kiss The Goat", "Satan's Little Helpers", "Calling Dr. Luv", & "Holy Roller."
To become acquainted with Reverend Thorn's musical evilution, seek out "My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult", which incidently, inspired & influenced one Rev. Marilyn Manson.
In My opinion, The best way to experience EHC is through headphones, as it is filled with such a plethora of sounds that should not be missed.
Great Satanic rock, but the lesser work of the band........2003-08-27
Excellent rock soundtrack for a Halloween night........2001-07-26
The material on disc one is comprised mostly of covers culled from various tribute albums put out by Cleopatra records over the years. If you're strictly an EHC fan and aren't fond of the gothic/darkwave genre then here you go, all EHC covers put onto one convenient little disc. It also contains a little sample of their latest release and the previously unreleased cover of INXS's "Devil Inside".
The second disc is a Halloween medley containing the previously hard to find "Trick or Treat" stuff. Their cover of the theme from "Halloween" is spot-on and blends seemlessly into the rest of the songs on this disc. I would have preferred that this disc be divided into individual tracks and not just one big medley, however. Their cover of Type O Negative's "Black No.1" is one of my favorite songs here and I can't skip ahead to it without holding down the fast forward button on my CD player. Also, this disc comes minus the Leaether Strip remix of "Incubus" which was on the original vinyl release.
All in all "Empathy for the Devil" is a great collection of songs predominately for EHC's fans and it's a great display of the sense of humor and fun that this band possesses.
