In these days of the crossover, it is hardly surprising to find two great opera singers making a foray into numbers from Broadway musicals by such composers as Cole Porter, Stephen Sondheim, and Andrew Lloyd Webber. What's remarkable is that they seem completely at home in this music. Both say they grew up listening to it, and indeed they approach these songs with no less care and seriousness than they'd give the most demanding operatic arias, and without a trace of condescension. However, their vocal, expressive, and interpretive styles are very different, both in the solos and the duets. Terfel projects assertive manliness, tender, intimate affection, and rollicking humor without external effects, using only his incomparably sonorous voice and powerful personality. His diction is impeccably clear, and though he has sometimes let his theatrical flair spill over into Schubert songs, he is the soul of simplicity here. This is in stark contrast to Fleming's tendency to exaggerate colors and dynamics and to turn sentiment into sentimentality. Moreover, though she claims a background as a jazz singer, her "crooning" sounds artificial and unnatural. However, her top notes, culminating in a triumphant high C at the end of the final number, ring gloriously. Her voice glows and shimmers with irresistible luster, soaring from seductive whispers to thrilling climaxes. The program features a great variety of love songs, and includes an antiwar protest (from Beautiful Game), a celebration of the American dream (from Ragtime), and a rousing fun piece (from The Music Man). Unfortunately, even the best songs are marred by thoroughly corny arrangements. Listeners will find their own favorites, but the real "stars" on this record are the two singers. --Edith Eisler

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Delightful .......2006-07-24

I truly enjoy Terfel's vocal talent and found it to be well suited for this genre. Fleming's impeccable soprano voice is a bit overpowering for this style of music. (I own this CD)

5 out of 5 stars A Master Class in Singing.......2006-06-20

This CD is a must-have for any person interested in the singing art. Ms. Fleming and Mr. Terfel gives new light to these Musical Theatre classics. Their fine vocalism in the musical theatre genre coupled with the depth of musicality and dramatic phrasing in each of the selections is truly a breath of fresh air. This recording is indeed a Master Class!

4 out of 5 stars Bryn is swell, but the bombast is annoying.......2006-05-03

Love Bryn Terfel, the finest bass-baritone in Opera. Love Renee Fleming's luscious soprano. But the arrangements! Kettle drums and bombast and bang, bang, bang! Once Renee starts swooping, things go downhill, with little redemption.

It starts out beautifully. "Not While I'm Around" has never sounded more intimate to me than Terfel's caressing pianissimo. Fleming's "Moonglow" is stunningly good. Terfel makes a medley out of "I Don't Remember You and Sometimes a Day Goes By" that makes you want to cheer, and Fleming does a lovely Sondheim medley as well. Bryn sings "Stars" and makes me long for him in Les Mis. And then...things tend to go downhill. The bombast takes over and gets to you - it overwhelms two of the biggest voices now recording. Then Fleming begins to swoop and scoop, over-coloring and often coming off as simply self-indulgent, reminding one of a kid who makes a point of putting his face in a camera shot.

I don't mind Bryn as Prof. Harold Hill - I frankly think the Welsh accent is kinda cute - and it doesn't bother me on "Wheels of Dream," either, but Fleming seems to have lost her mind on that great song, and rather than indulging her, it would have simply been better left off the album. Ditto "All that Wasted Time" which is pretty much unlistenable. Ms. Fleming needs to stop thinking she is a jazz singer.

The four stars are because this album does contain some truly GLORIOUS moments, particularly in the duets, and in Terfel's solo's which are warm and memorable. Without him, the kettle drums and Fleming's self-indulgence would have made the whole endeavor unbearable.

5 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Fine Crossover from Fleming and Terfel.......2006-04-18

Bryn Terfel and Renee Fleming are two of the most acclaimed opera singers of our day. But the musical theatre fan who puts on their Broadway CD, RENEE AND BRYN: UNDER THE STARS, expecting to hear a carelessly compiled hodgepodge of songs sung by voices ill-suited to them is in for a big surprise, beginning with the first phrases of the duo's warmly sung "Not While I'm Around" from SWEENEY TODD. True, these singers' beautiful voices have greater power and range than even the best of the Broadway stars', but this is an asset in these songs, most of which are either semi-operatic in nature or call (like THE MUSIC MAN's "Seventy-Six Trombones") for such an outsize personality as Terfel's. Fleming's sensuous and tonally gorgeous rendition of "Moonfall" from THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD can be placed among her very finest recordings, operatic and otherwise. And Terfel is ideally suited to both "Pretty Women" from SWEENEY TODD and "Stars" from LES MISERABLES; few if any Broadway Javerts could match the impact of his "This I swear by the stars!" Kander and Ebb's "I Don't Remember You" and "Sometimes a Day Goes By" make a perfect medley here, as do Sondheim's "I Wish I Could Forget You" and "Loving You" from PASSION. And though I don't care for the Andrew Lloyd Webber selections (ersatz Puccini) or the Jason Robert Brown one (which sounds too much like a pop song), Terfel and Fleming's singing of them is beyond reproach. The program ends with a bang: a rendition of "Wheels of a Dream" worthy to stand beside the now-classic one by Brian Stokes Mitchell and Audra McDonald on the original cast album of RAGTIME. Welshman Terfel's natural accent is noticeable here; but if one imagines him as, say, an Irish immigrant married to an African-American woman (as Fleming here sounds uncannily like McDonald or like Leontyne Price) his accent is appropriate and his voicing of the "bridge" section ("Oh Sarah, it's more than promises/Sarah, it must be true...") especially moving. Fleming's ecstatic final high note makes one want to applaud and cheer, both for the song and for the successful "crossover" effort.

5 out of 5 stars BREATHTAKING VOCAL MAGNIFICENCE~BRAVO!!!.......2004-10-11

So captivating are these incredible singers in the glorious live concert "Under The Stars" creating an unforgettable musical masterpiece of epic proportions that is so moving and great to watch that I ran out and purchased this studio recorded Compact Disc the next day!! The brilliance of the live broadcast carried over into the recording studio capturing Renee and Bryn at the peak of their incredible powers emotionally and vocally making them the most effective crossover artists since the great Barbara Cook who like Miss Cook sing with emotion that is accurate for this type of material which is usually not the case with classical voices. Renee Fleming sings with genuine passion and stirring emotions and her timing is absolutely flawless and this lady has alot of soul and the Torrie Zito arranged "Moonfall" is a stunning masterpiece that clearly illustrates this. A dazzling medley each show both singers in glorious peak form with Bryn splendid in the enchanting "I Don't Remember You/Sometimes A Day Goes By" and Renee spellbinding and haunting in the gorgeous "I Wish I Could Forget You/Loving You" which will make anyone who loves a great voice fall in love with this amazingly gifted singer. "Stars" features a commanding performance from Bryn that raises the roof and this is so refreshing and inspired in these musically tired times!!! This superb showcase is full of wonderfully exciting performances which are capable of making people feel again and this is what is sorely needed in music today and BRAVO to Bryn Terfel and the gorgeous Renee Fleming for achieving this with complete artistic brilliance. Captivating duets fill this wonderous collection and never have classics such as "Not While I'm Around" or "All I Ask Of You" been sung more brilliantly than here. Renee is magical with "Hello, Young Lovers" while Bryn is commanding and winning with "Pretty Women". Renee's stunning "All The Wasted Time" is a vocal and emotional tour-de-force that is like a wild roller-coaster ride that you won't want to end as this is one of the most riveting songs that I have ever heard from a Broadway score and this certainly must be the definitive performance of this great song. This lady can really really sing and this is some deeply serious singing~WOW!!! Gorgeous together again in the beautiful "How Could I Ever Know" which is hair-raising and wonderfully soulful and sophisicated together in Cole Porter's "So In Love". A grand finale by these two awesome vocal wonders lives up to expectations being a complete blowout vocal festival and they definitely do not disappoint here!!! "Wheels Of A Dream" is mesmerizing and soars to magnificent heights with Bryn and Renee in peak form singing to the skies and hitting notes that I swear I have never heard before~BRAVO!!!!!!! You are both magically inspired and simply put as good as it gets!!!! Highly recommended if you love two awesome vocal wonders at their absolute peak in a magnificent beautifully orchestrated setting!!! Thank you Bryn & Renee...

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Glad it's back.......2006-01-17

I had the original import back in the '80s. I had lost the CD due to a break-up. I had longed for the haunting and mesmerising vocals from the girls. I was astonished when I found the ressurection of the album (no matter how it is mixed). Duel is probably my favorite song of all times and takes me back to a time when my cares were minimal and life was simple. This is a 5-star+. I urge anyone who is considering this CD to break down and get it. You will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Clearing Up The Rubbish.......2006-01-04

I've been hearing and seeing people elsewhere bicker about this imported remaster, so I'm going to clear up the facts and variations to this album, as it is in-comparable in similarity to the second original release which some heard back in 1985.

This re-release is neither the re-master of the USA, German, or original UK versions that were issued under ZZT publisher. It's actually the remaster of the "actual" original album published under ZZT/Polystar, and Island Records in the first quarters of 1985 (which was issued all over Japan and Germany). As some are saying tracks like "Dr. Mabuse" and "Jewell" are sounding more off beat and with ill-reverb. The second issue album which became the commercial release held up to 10-11 tracks. With "Dr. Mabuse" separated from "Strength To Dream." In the original release they were together, and it was titled in composite "Das Testament Des Mabuse." So before buying, here is the actual track list of what your getting other than what's printed or clarified on the label.

    1. 9:08 Dream Within A Dream (extended and remixed)
    2. 5:13 The Murder Of Love
    3. 6:23 Jewel (cut rough minus the first cut intro)
    4. 4:43 Duel (cd remix)
    5. 4:25 Frozen Faces
    6. 3:50 p:Machinery (single mix, which was on all releases)
    7. 3:27 Sorry For Laughing
    8. 4:05 The Chase
    9. 10:42 Das Testament Des Mabuse/Strength To Dream ["Dr. Mabuse"]

DVD (Region 2) 5.1: Music Videos and Discography Gallery)
    1 Dr. Mabuse (Version 1)
    2 Dr. Mabuse (Version 2)
    3 Duel (Version 1)
    4 Duel (Version 2)
    5 p-machinery

Does it make it less worth the buck for importing? Heck NO! I think this remaster in fact, is a treasure trove! (As this version was released in limited round.) The sound is much better and crystal than it has ever been, and it comes with goodies if you have a region free DVD player on ya!

    4 out of 5 stars A MASTERPIECE OF 80'S AVANT-GARDE FM RADIO.......2005-07-01

The true highlight of this recording is the 2nd track, "The Murder Of Love" - this CD is worth the price just for that incredible composition all on its own. Otherwise, an amazing listening experience from start to finish, best played uninterrupted with a great set of headphones.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST ALBUM OF THE 1980'S!! CLAUDIA BRUCKEN RULES!!.......2004-11-03

THIS IS WITHOUT DOUBT THE MOST AWESOME ALBUM TO COME OUT OF EUROPE IN THE 1980'S. THIS IS INCREDIBLE AND SINCE IT'S FROM THE SAME PEOPLE WHO BROUGHT YOU FRANKIE GOES TO HOLLYWOOD AND THE ART OF NOISE IT IS INCREDIBLE. IT'S HARD TO TELL WHICH IS BETTER CLAUDIA BRUCKEN'S INCREDIBLE VOICE OR SUSANNAH FREYTAG'S SPEAKING VOICE BOTH OF WHICH ARE WORKED. P-MACHINARY AND DR MABUSE ARE BOTH STILL FABULOUS AFTER 20 YEARS. DR MABUSE IS 11:43 AND THE LAST THREE MINUTES ARE THREE OF THE MOST INCREDIBLE SOUNDING MINUTES YOU WILL EVER HEAR. THERE'S EVAN A THUNDERSTORM WITH POURING RAIN AND THUNDER. 5 out of 5 stars Lovely music!.......2001-12-18

These CDs are for lovers of Irish music and of the "old-timey" sound of John McCormack. The songs themselves are lovely, and James Flannery sings them exactly as they need to be sung... in a simple and straightforward manner. The music is evocative of the sound and spirit of a long-ago time. The accompanying book gives interesting background information about Thomas Moore and also about the songs. Good listening for a rainy day or a snowy night with the fire blazing.

With 44 items on a disc running just under an hour, you know not to expect much depth in these many miniatures. But the unpretentious charm and occasional sophistication of these Scottish songs and dances are winning, especially since they have been carefully selected from several manuscript sources. McFarlane obviously loves this material, and he plays it with a great deal of imagination and flair. His emphasis for this collection is on rhythmic dances, but he has made sure to include enough softer, gentler melodies for contrast. And while some of the tunes could come from anywhere, quite a few have distinctive Scottish qualities. For those interested in the lute, this beautifully recorded disc is a treat, enhanced by uncommonly helpful and informative program notes by Kevin Bazzana. --Leslie Gerber

          3 out of 5 stars A Foreshadowing..........2004-11-24

As a long-time guitarist and fan of Scottish traditional music, I was amazed by this collection! If I didn't know better, I would have sworn I was hearing Tony McManus, Dick Gaughan, or even Mark Knophler in his more Caledonian moments. Truly, these selections from 17th and 18th century lute books cement the guitar's place in traditional Scottish music as solidly as that of the fiddle or even bagpipes (both of which didn't gain popularity until the 1600's anyway; and although most listeners are unaware, most of their repetiore of reels, jigs, and airs comes from the 1770's to 1850's, decades AFTER the music in this collection). Needless to say, their ARE tonal and technique differences between the lute and guitar, but the two instruments are very closely related in both respects and almost indistiguishable to many listeners. Thus, the mellow, haunting tunes here are a foreshadowing of the present day's great Celtic guitarists, but, much more than that, exquisite listening for their own sakes. To those who play guitar, I also recommend the available transcription book, although be aware it is in standard notation, not tab!

5 out of 5 stars Masterful Follow-up to The Scottish Lute.......2001-08-21

The Baltimore Consort's Ron McFarlane has followed up his cd "The Scottish Lute" with a brilliant effort that surpasses this cd's predecessor. McFarlane's Lute work is superb and shows a great sensitivity to the material. Beyonds ressurecting the lute tradition in Scotland, he plays these selections with wonderful restraint. I find that early music either works well or fails completely. This cd is an unquestionable success. While the tunes do not have the sophistication of John Dowland, they are worthy in their own right of the listener's attention. A wonderful cd that is consistently enjoyable and rewarding for the listener.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the Best.......2005-09-20

Incredible album. I must have listened to it a thousand times, never get tired of it and don't think I ever will. I always find myself putting it on in the car when I get tired of my "new" music. 20 years later it still seems as fresh as the day in 1986 I first bought the vinyl LP. If it weren't for owning a CD copy, I would have worn out my LP long, long ago! "A Secret Wish" is completely mesmerizing and everlasting.

          5 out of 5 stars Transcendent Synth.......2005-04-10

The absolute apotheosis of 80s synthesizer music. One of my favorite and most-listened-to albums by anyone, ever. Atmospheric, expansive, compelling. Redoubtable, riveting; full of miraculous chordal progressions which almost seem to defy logic, gravity, and all previous musical expression. Sounds crazy? Nope, it's really that good. A work of undisputed genius.

Propaganda never again reached this peak ...But then neither did anyone else. Miss "A Secret Wish" at your peril!

5 out of 5 stars Ahead of its time.......2005-01-16

A CD that sounds transcends time really, Secret Wish sounds more like it could be released today, not 20 years ago. It's hard to believe this music was done without MIDI technology.

Perhaps one of the finest synthpop releases of the 80s, dare I say ever. Smart and eclectic, with outstanding vocals. "Duel" is probably one of my all time favorite songs. "Dream within in Dream" provides an outstanding opening, "P-Machinery" is a great dance track, and who can forget the scene in "Some Kind of Wonderful" that features "Dr. Mabuse".

Expertly produced by Stephen Lipson (with Trevor Horn) who worked with Grace Jones and Frankie Goes to Hollywood soon after. Well worth adding to any collection.

5 out of 5 stars Das Testament auf a great album.......2003-11-02

Claudia Brucken & Suzanne Freytag. The most deliciously tantalizing combination in electronic pop history. The band just wasn't the same after Claudia left. But this album is truly magical. If Kraftwerk invented the genre and gave life to it, Propaganda breathed emotion & passion into it. Solid synth work, and absolutely gorgeous vocal arrangements. They tried being like Kraftwerk.....but they did so much better than kraftwerk could ever hope to. (God strike me down for my blasphemy!) Featuring Trevor Horn's slick production, and contributions from celebrities such as: Glenn Gregory (Heaven-17), David Sylvian (Japan), and Steve Howe (Yes), this album is a literal who's who of musical talent. It's a crime that this album didn't do better in the States. A true Gem of 80's & pop music perfection. This album is the prefect way to introduce new listeners to the synth music genre. I was sold the first time I heard Duel & Dr. Mabuse. Americans may have invented the Synthesizer. But the Germans perfected it. And this album is living proof. Fans should also check out Claudia Brucken's work with Act, and Spirit Feel. And I can't WAIT for her very-soon-to-be-released & much-anticipated collaboration with Paul Humphreys of OMD. Should be out in early 2004 I hear. Buy this album....and it will get stuck in your CD Changer. I guarantee it.

          5 out of 5 stars Synthpop At It's Best.......2003-02-12

During the '80's there was an explosion of bands (a lot of them British) that used synthesizers to inovate their sound.A lot of them succeeded too..(Depeche Mode,Heaven 17,Human League etc.)in gaining a mass audience that welcomed each new album with relish. However, no one really established the chilling effect of synthpop like Propaganda did.Hailing from Germany, these four musicians made a masterpiece during 1985 that would define the '80s alternative music scene forever. With British ace producers Trevor Horn and Steve Lipson at the helm,A Secret Wish was born. The cinematic opener,A Dream Within A Dream is truly a standout.Singer Suzanne Freytag's icy narration lasts well over 8 minutes before turning over the major vocal duties to Claudia Brucken who has the most unsual but interesting voice that debut's on The Murder Of Love.Duel and P-machinery were the commercials high points. Both were sizeable hits with a heavy percussion sound. The rest of the album is much darker and forbidding .Dr Mabuse(their first single)tells the tale of evil doings, while Frozen Faces(another standout)and The Chase highlight Claudia's voice to the best effect. The closing track Strength To Dream establishes once again the chilling cinematic presence of the album opener A Dream Within A Dream. This album is truly a classic.I just hope that Propaganda would reform and make another masterpiece like this one.
